Arvin Appiah no tendrá que volver a Almería nunca más. La UD Almería y el Amiens de la Ligue 2 han acordado la cesión del extremo inglés durante esta nueva temporada y, al acabar contrato con la UDA en junio de 2026, Appiah pasará a ser en ese momento jugador en propiedad del conjunto francés. Además, los andaluces se harán cargo del 50% de su ficha, según ha informado ‘Diario de Almería’.
Concluirá así un larguísimo recorrido de un fichaje que en su día llegó a ser el más caro de la historia del club rojiblanco y que ha terminado en fracaso. Con la llegada de Turki Al-Sheikh en el verano de 2019 tras comprar el club, el ahora ex propietario del Almería se encaprichó con un jugador que comenzaba a despuntar en el Nottingham Forest y ya militaba en las categorías inferiores de Inglaterra.
El Almería llegó incluso a alardear en sus redes sociales de haberle ‘robado’ al Manchester United a Arvin Appiah, previo pago de la friolera de 8,8 millones de euros. Una cantidad sin precedentes en la historia de la UDA hasta que, primero Umar Sadiq lo superó redondeando la cifra a 9 ‘kilos’ tras cumplirse algunas variables por su gran rendimiento, y poco después fue César Montes quien colocó el récord en 10,5 + 3,5 millones.
La propiedad saudí quiso exhibir músculo económico en su llegada a España e intentó construir a su primera “estrella” … sin éxito. El joven extremo zurdo, quien es cierto que pasó por momentos complicados derivados de problemas médicos que afectaron directamente en su rendimiento deportivo, no llegó nunca a explotar y fue encadenando cesiones una detrás de otra: Lugo, Tenerife, Málaga, Rotherham y, por último, el Nacional de Madeira. En ninguno de ellos consiguió el nivel esperado y cada pretemporada regresaba a la disciplina indálica, a veces entrenando con el filial, en busca de un nuevo destino.
El Almería lo renovó en secreto en verano de 2022 para diferir su salario en más años y dar así oxígeno a un asfixiante límite salarial. El Almería ya ha hecho oficial su salida, concluyendo así un triste capítulo de lo que pudo ser y nunca fue.
