Horner byl šéfem stáje od jejího vstupu do formule 1 v roce 2005. Získal s ní osm titulů mistra světa a šest Pohárů konstruktérů. Součástí tohoto období byla i naprostá dominance rakouské stáje, když v sezoně 2023 a navazujícím začátku sezony 2024 vyhrála 28 z 32 Velkých cen.
Letos se ale Red Bullu nedaří podle očekávání. Úřadující čtyřnásobný mistr světa Max Verstappen se musí pomalu smířit s tím, že pátý titul v řadě nezíská. Po 13 letošních závodech je na třetím místě v pořadí jezdců za oběma piloty McLarenu. Na vedoucího Piastriho má manko 81 bodů.
Ani druhý monopost týmu nešlape, jak by měl. Liam Lawson za první dvě Velké ceny nebodoval ani jednou, jeho nástupce Júki Cunoda si připsal pouhých sedm bodů a loňský aspirant na vítězství v Poháru konstruktérů se rázem musí spokojit se čtvrtým místem.
Právě pokles bodových zisků i výkonnosti monopostů byl podle Marka hlavním důvodem k propuštění Hornera. „Oliver Mintzlaff (výkonný ředitel Red Bullu) se rozhodl a Christianovi jsme to oznámili v úterý po Velké ceně Británie. Kromě toho jsme mu poděkovali za 20 let služeb a osm titulů mistra světa,“ sdělil Marko televizi Sky DE.
„Bylo to důsledkem všemožných věcí, z nichž tím hlavním bylo jednoduše to, že výkonnost v posledních závodech nebyla vyhovující,“ pokračoval Marko.
Hornera nahradil šéf Racing Bull Laurent Mekies, jenž si o víkendu v Belgii vyzkoušel svou novou funkci v plném proudu sprintového víkendu. Ve sprintu sice Verstappen vyhrál, v hlavním závodě ale dojel čtvrtý a Cunoda opět nebodoval.
„Naštěstí jsme mohli okamžitě angažovat Laurenta Mekiese. Ten bude mít výrazně méně povinností než Horner a jeho hlavním zaměřením budou závody,“ doplnil Marko.
Formule 1 2025
Letošní sezona seriálu formule 1 začala 16. března Velkou cenou Austrálie a končí 7. prosince v Abú Zabí. Titul mezi jezdci obhajuje Nizozemec Max Verstappen z Red Bullu a mezi stájemi britský McLaren.
