Jeremiah Smith has issued a bold warning ahead of the 2025/26 NCAA season as the Ohio State Buckeyes‘ wide receiver declares he will be stepping up his game in college football.
It’s warning that all defenses across the nation will heed after his role in a breakout freshman campaign that played a crucial role in the Buckeyes‘ national championship run.

The youngster produced 1315 yards and 15 touchdowns on 76 receptions, and also added a rushing score too, but he warns he can step it up from there – mentally and physically.
“Last year, certain games I hesitated doing certain things,” Smith said. “Not really going full speed.
“But this year I know what to expect and how to do it. So it’s going to be scary this year for sure.”
Smith‘s freshman performance was nothing short of elite and now he could be a favourite for the Heisman Trophy honors if he manages to improve upon his numbers for Ohio.
Known for his consistency, route running, and explosive playmaking, he helped guide the Buckeyes to a College Football Playoff appearance-and ultimately to the national title over Notre Dame.
Smith became a household name, emerging as one of the most feared offensive players in the nation and an eagerly anticipated NFL prospect, thanks to his exceptional connection with his quarterback.
But the challenge now shifts to a new era for the Buckeyes. Howard has moved on to the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers; and with his departure, the highly regarded Julian Sayin takes over the reins of the offense.
Sayin, entering his first season as the full-time starter, inherits a lofty set of expectations. Fortunately for the young signal-caller, he’ll have one of the nation’s premier wide receivers as a primary target.
That means Smith‘s explosiveness and growing confidence could be the key to helping Sayin settle quickly into the starting role but also getting the best out of himself too as he prepares for a huge season.
And it’s a huge season for not just the star, but the Buckeyes too after they lost their offensive coordinator as Chip Kelly elected to join the Las Vegas Raiders. Their defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles, also left too.
To fill those voids, Ohio State turned to Brian Hartline as OC and Matt Patricia to oversee the defense. Both coordinators will face immense pressure to maintain the Buckeyes‘ championship standard.
Who do the Buckeyes play in Week 1: Where to watch and start time for season opener
The team opens the season on August 30 against the Texas Longhorns at 12pm ET, who will be led by their own highly-touted quarterback in the form of Arch Manning. Fans can watch the game on FOX Sports.
The primetime clash is already one of the most anticipated matchups of the opening weekend and will serve as an early litmus test for the retooled Buckeyes.
