Pod 22 sekund se ve finále dostala jako jediná, za Anavií Battleovou (22,13) si poslední místo pro Tokio zajistila olympijská vítězka Gabby Thomasová (20,20) ve fotofiniši o jedinou tisícinu sekundy.
Do finále nepostoupila bronzová medailistka z posledního MS Sha’Carri Richardsonová. V Eugene předtím odstoupila ze stovky po rozbězích, na nejkratším sprintu ale může v Tokiu startovat jako obhájkyně prvenství.
Na osmistovce si vracející se mistr světa z roku 2019 Donavan Brazier zajistil titul v osobním rekordu 1:42,16. Za ním se ke skvělému času vytáhl teprve šestnáctiletý Cooper Lutkenhaus, který vylepšil časem 1:42,27 historické maximum v kategorii do 18 let a zařadil se na druhé místo všech dob mezi juniory.
