The arrival of Tom Brady as a minority partner has injected fresh hope into the Las Vegas Raiders organization. The seven-time Super Bowl champion’s winning mentality is already influencing the team, as reflected in quarterback Geno Smith’s latest remarks.
After five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Smith joined the Raiders at the request of new head coach Pete Carroll. Together, they aim to channel the competitive vision of Brady and team owner Mark Davis.
Last season, under interim head coach Antonio Pierce and a carousel of quarterbacks, the Raiders limped to a 4-13 record. Now, Carroll and Smith have been tasked with rewriting the narrative-and Smith believes the team is poised to surprise.
Geno Smith’s warning to the league
Facing skepticism from analysts and fans, Geno Smith shared a confident message Monday during an appearance on NFL Network’s Inside Training Camp Live. “I’m always the guy who believes the game gets settled between the white lines on game day,” the 13-year veteran said.
He asserted that they are entering the 2025 season with a great team, predicting they will be the surprise of the year. “I don’t know if we’ll shock anyone inside this building, but maybe we’ll shock some outsiders. And that’s the best part-let them sleep. I don’t want them to see us coming.”
Known for his bold declarations, Smith delivered a chilling forecast: “We’re just working in the shadows right now, getting our game right, and when it’s time to step into those bright lights, I think we’ll be ready.”
The front office has also done its work
With Brady advising behind the scenes, newly appointed general manager John Spytek has wasted no time. The team brought in Smith, locked down pass-rusher Maxx Crosby with a multi-year extension, and selected standout running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 draft.
If Carroll can unite this mix of seasoned veterans, prime-age stars, and high-upside rookies, Smith’s prediction may be more than just bravado.
The question is: Will the NFL see them coming? Smith’s answer is clear-they shouldn’t.
