The Jacksonville Jaguars are no strangers to transitions, and this offseason has brought another big one. New head coach Liam Coen, known for revitalizing Baker Mayfield’s careerin Tampa Bay, is in town to reboot the offense – and possibly Trevor Lawrencealong with it.
Lawrence is heading into his fifth NFL season, but despite flashes of brilliance, consistency has remained just out of reach. With Coen taking over, the blueprint for success is already in the building. The question is whether Lawrence can follow it.

Coen’s approach is all about timing and rhythm – traits he emphasized on The Rich Eisen Show last week. He talked about precision footwork, hitting receivers in stride, and always being ready to throw, even when the pocket breaks down. It’s not just coaching theory either. Coen helped Mayfield rack up 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns last season, and now he’s applying the same principles in Jacksonville.
But things aren’t clicking quite yet.
New Energy on the Field – But Not From the Quarterback
While Lawrence is working through the learning curve, rookie Travis Hunter is already generating highlight clips at training camp. Drafted second overall, Hunter has quickly emerged as one of the most electric players on the field – starting at wide receiver and backing up at cornerback. According to Reuters, the Jaguars list him as a two-way contributor, and he’s living up to that role.
He’s fast, fearless, and already syncing with the playbook. The contrast between Hunter’s fast rise and Lawrence’s struggles has raised eyebrows. NFL Network’s James Palmer even noted that Lawrence’s red zone timing has looked off in early camp practices, and his chemistry with young receivers still seems like a work in progress.
It’s not entirely surprising. Lawrence has played under three head coaches in five seasons. The constant resets haven’t done him any favors. Still, Coen is clearly expecting more, especially in areas like footwork, decision-making, and play extension – all things Mayfield executed well last season.
Even Mayfield himself spoke highly of Coen’s impact in a recent SiriusXM NFL Radio interview. “Liam helped me process faster, see the field better, and play with confidence,” he said. “Trevor’s got a coach who’ll pour into him the same way.” It’s a strong endorsement – but at this point, words need to be backed up with results.
The Jaguars know what they’re building: a team that’s younger, faster, and more versatile. Travis Hunter fits that mold perfectly. Whether Trevor Lawrence still does – well, that’s what this season will decide.
