Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens, who is also known for being married to Olympic gymnastics icon Simone Biles, was involved in a heated on-field incident with teammate Roschon Johnson during the team’s training camp on Tuesday.
The scuffle came after tensions flared in the middle of a highly competitive practice session, a scenario that’s becoming increasingly common across NFL training camps this summer.
Simone Biles reveals Owens’ patience before big night!
According to multiple reports, the confrontation began after Owens attempted what was described as a “late peanut punch”, a move in football where a defender tries to knock the ball out of an opponent’s hands.
Johnson, seemingly irked by the late play, responded by throwing the football at Owens. The safety then tackled Johnson to the ground, escalating the situation into a full-blown skirmish before coaches and teammates quickly intervened to restore order.
Johnson, when asked about the altercation later in the day, brushed it off as a product of competitive intensity.
“That’s just camp. Getting competitive, that’s all it was,” Johnson told reporters. “Like I said, it’s football. When you compete at a high level, stuff like that is bound to happen.”
A pattern of preseason tensions across the NFL
Training camp dust-ups aren’t uncommon in the NFL. The high-pressure environment, coupled with intense physical demands and the fight for starting positions, often leads to tempers flaring.
Similar incidents have already been reported this preseason from other camps, including teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots.
For Owens, who joined the Bears in 2024 following stints with the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans, this confrontation may have been a sign of his assertiveness on defense, but it also brings added scrutiny due to his growing public profile.
Off the field, Owens and Biles have been making headlines as well. The couple, who tied the knot in 2023, recently announced they’re settling into a new custom-built mansion in Texas.
In April, Biles shared images of their dogs exploring the expansive home, showing a more tranquil side of their life outside the spotlight of sports.
However, Biles herself faced her own controversy in recent weeks, after clashing with conservative commentator and former swimmer Riley Gaines over the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Biles initially lashed out at Gaines in a tweet calling her views “truly sick” and mocking her appearance, but later issued a public apology after backlash.
“The current system doesn’t adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges,” Biles posted on X (formerly Twitter). “And it didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for.”
Gaines accepted the apology and responded graciously: “I accept Simone’s apology for the personal attacks including the ones where she body-shamed me. I know she knows what this feels like. She’s still the greatest female gymnast of all time.”
As for Owens, the training camp clash appears to be behind him now, and both he and Johnson are expected to continue preparing for what’s shaping up to be a high-stakes NFL season.
With Owens striving to solidify his role in the Bears’ secondary, all eyes will be on how he performs, not just in camp, but when the regular season begins.
