Anthony Richardson’s journey in the NFL has been far from smooth, plagued by injuries and inconsistent performances in his first two seasons.
After 15 starts and a concerning 50.6% completion rate, which ranks among the worst since 1980, the 23-year-old quarterback is now facing more pressure than ever. In his third season, Richardson was once again thrust into a battle for the starting QB position for the Indianapolis Colts, adding further uncertainty to his future in the league.

Richardson appeared to be on track to claim the starting job for the Colts at the beginning of the 2025 preseason. However, a hit in the team’s first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens nearly derailed his progress.
On a 2nd-and-10 play early in the first quarter, Richardson was blindsided by Ravens linebacker David Ojabo, who came unblocked off the edge. The collision left Richardson shaken and forced him to leave the game. Thankfully, the quarterback avoided serious injury, sustaining only a dislocated pinky on his throwing hand.
After undergoing X-rays, the Colts confirmed there was no major damage, and Richardson may be able to return to practice shortly.
Despite the relatively minor injury, the incident raised many questions about Richardson’s future in the NFL. Analyst Jason McIntyre, known for his outspoken opinions, did not mince words.
On The Herd, McIntyre suggested that Richardson’s career may be headed toward a premature end. He pointed out that Richardson had struggled with injuries and had not yet demonstrated the consistency expected from a top draft pick. McIntyre even suggested that Richardson may soon be playing in the Canadian Football League (CFL), given his lack of college experience, struggles to read defenses, and persistent injury woes.
The road ahead for Richardson
Richardson’s early career has been far from ideal, and the challenges he’s faced are mounting. His first two seasons were plagued by injuries, which limited his ability to develop as a starting quarterback. As he enters his third year, he now finds himself in another QB battle, this time with veteran Daniel Jones and rookie Riley Leonard.
Despite the preseason injury, Richardson is still the favorite to start in Week 1, with -250 odds, showing that the Colts’ coaching staff still believes in his potential. However, Richardson’s competition has failed to make a compelling case.
Daniel Jones, who replaced Richardson during the game, completed just 10 of 21 passes for 144 yards. Rookie Riley Leonard also struggled, going 12-for-24 with 92 yards and an interception.
Richardson may have dodged a major injury this time, but his career still hangs in the balance. The Colts will need to carefully manage his development moving forward.
Whether Richardson can overcome his setbacks and fulfill his potential as the former No. 4 overall pick will determine his future in the NFL. For now, all eyes will remain on the young QB as he works to solidify his place in the league.
