NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders enters his third season as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, but for the first time, he will not have his son, Shedeur Sanders, running the offense. Even so, “Coach Prime” is radiating confidence in the battle for the starting quarterback job.
On Tuesday, Sanders spoke about his two main options: promising freshman Julian Lewis and Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter. According to Pat Graham of The Associated Press, Sanders sees winning qualities in both and is not concerned about who will take control under center. “Both guys can play. We can perform well with either one of them,” he said.

Julian Lewis is very similar to Shedeur
At just 17 years old, Lewis is a pure passer whose style closely resembles that of Shedeur Sanders. His accuracy and field vision could allow the offense to maintain the same structure as last year, making for a smooth transition.
Kaidon Salter, on the other hand, brings a completely different profile. He is a dual-threat quarterback capable of creating danger both through the air and on the ground. If Salter wins the starting job, Colorado’s offense could gain an extra dimension with plays designed to take advantage of his mobility and athleticism.
Sanders is in no rush
The Buffaloes will open the season on August 29 against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Sanders doesn’t seem in a hurry to name his starting quarterback, and it’s likely that the decision will be revealed just days before the opener.
Last season, Colorado finished with a 9-4 record and reached the Alamo Bowl, where they fell 36-14 to BYU. That ending left a bitter taste for both the team and the fans, but Sanders believes that the mix of young talent and experience will allow them to aim higher in 2025.
Sanders stays true to his style
With a revamped roster, a healthy quarterback competition, and the motivation to erase last season’s bowl loss, the Buffaloes dream of a campaign that will take them to the playoffs.
True to his style, Sanders insists his confidence is unshakable, and that regardless of who leads the offense, Colorado will have what it takes to compete at the highest level.
