There’s no doubt that the battle for the quarterback position with the Cleveland Browns has been both interesting and stressful. There’s no clarity at quarterback, and doubts have only grown after Shedeur Sanders delivered an outstanding performance in his preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers.
Shedeur Sanders continues to rip apart defenses at Browns practice and put Cleveland in a tough spot
Shedeur Sanders seemed to be forgotten by Kevin Stefanski. Despite reports that Deion Sanders’ son was having strong practices, he had no opportunities to work with the first team. Just days before the first preseason game, Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett suffered hamstring injuries, opening a huge door for Shedeur.
The former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback knew this could be his first and only chance, especially given all the negativity surrounding him. However, Shedeur Sanders put all his talent on display on the field and, with two touchdown passes and an overall excellent showing, has given Kevin Stefanski and the entire Browns organization a lot to think about.
Analyst believes Shedeur Sanders showed more than Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel
Joe Flacco has always been at the top – he’s the most experienced quarterback on the team and is about to begin his 18th NFL season. After Flacco, it’s always been Kenny Pickett and rookie Dillon Gabriel, with Shedeur Sanders constantly overlooked.
In fact, despite Sanders’ performance against the Panthers, he remains QB4 on the depth chart. Tony Rizzo, an ESPN analyst who has always been one of Shedeur’s defenders, believes that if Sanders is still ranked below Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett at the start of the season, there could be issues.
“If I’m Shedeur, I’m sitting fourth on the depth chart – I know I’m better than that. I know I am. If I go into September 7 against the [Cincinnati] Bengals and I’ve got Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett in front of me… man, I’m not going to be a happy camper.”
For now, despite the controversy, Shedeur Sanders hasn’t said anything and has presented himself like a complete professional. That’s the right path, and if he delivers a strong performance against the Eagles in the preseason, Kevin Stefanski might no longer have an argument to keep him as QB4.
