A new video shared on social media has brought plenty of laughs to Baltimore Ravens fans, showcasing a playful diving contest featuring none other than Olympic legend and 23 time gold medalist Michael Phelps.
The players invited Phelps to their training camp after noticing that roughly a third of the team couldn’t swim. In a previous clip, he was informed about the situation, which excited the athlete greatly, according to Cathy Bennett, director of the Michael Phelps Foundation program. On top of that, Phelps is a huge Ravens fan, making the visit even more special.
In the video, the players give their all in the dives: some manage flips, others belly-flop, some jump backward, others do cannonball-style dives, and one even performs a backward somersault. Viewer comments reflect the fun the clip generated: “This team is too damn injury prone to be doing all this foolishness,” “The noodles wrapped around the legs for floaties is funny,” and “I’ve watched this video at least a dozen times. I’m trying to figure out which player was holding his nose while jumping off the diving board.”
Fun and learning with Michael Phelps
Although the dives stole the spotlight online, Phelps’ visit also included more serious and educational activities. Some of the team received swimming lessons directly from the medalist, while others raced him in 25 meter sprints, with Phelps giving them head starts to level the playing field. Even his son Beckett joined in on some of the challenges, adding more fun to the day.
The players took the opportunity to improve their water skills and overcome fears. For example, Travis Jones received tips on moving more easily using floaties, and Roquan Smith, who previously only knew the doggy paddle, admitted it was his first time learning basic techniques and that he now feels more confident in the water.
The visit also had a social impact: kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Baltimore joined the session and learned alongside the players. Phelps used the moment to promote the mission of his foundation, and the Ravens reciprocated with a $100,000 donation, closing a day that combined fun, learning, and community.
