At the start of the preseason, the battle for the Giants’ starting quarterback spot included four contenders: Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito. However, it quickly became clear that the real competition was between Wilson and Dart, with the 36-year-old veteran seemingly favored to secure the role.
However, in recent preseason games and training sessions, Jaxson Dart has impressed, at times outshining Russell Wilson. His standout performances have intensified the debate over who should start for the Giants in Week 1 of the NFL season.
That’s when Giants head coach Brian Daboll stepped in to settle the debate. Speaking at the postgame press conference after New York’s 31-12 win over the Jets, Daboll made it clear. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, he stated, “Coach Brian Daboll reiterated, ‘Russ is our starter.”
The statement leaves no doubt that Russell Wilson will lead the Giants into the upcoming season. Still, some fans and analysts are advocating for young Jaxson Dart, who has impressed during the preseason and is seen by many as the fresh spark the team needs at quarterback. Jaxson Dart: The rising challenger to Russell Wilson
The stats speak for themselves: in his latest matchup against the New York Jets, Jaxson Dart impressed with a near-flawless performance. The rookie completed 14 of 16 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, while also adding a rushing touchdown of his own, cementing his status as one of the standout players on the field.
It’s worth noting that Dart joined the Giants as one of the most promising rookies, having been selected 25th overall in the NFL Draft. His college career at USC was impressive, marked by significant victories and recognition as one of the top quarterback prospects of the 2025 class.
