A temporada de 2025 está sendo marcante para João Fonseca. O jovem carioca de 18 anos foi convocado para integrar o Time Mundo na Laver Cup, torneio que coloca frente a frente alguns dos maiores nomes do tênis mundial. O evento acontecerá de 19 a 21 de setembro, em São Francisco, nos Estados Unidos.
João Fonseca ganha espaço no Time Mundo
Fonseca foi o quarto nome anunciado da equipe e terá como companheiros os norte-americanos Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul e Frances Tiafoe. O time será liderado pela lenda do esporte Andre Agassi, que assumiu o posto de capitão no lugar de John McEnroe.
Em declaração oficial, o brasileiro não escondeu a emoção por participar do torneio pela primeira vez: “Estou muito feliz por ter sido convocado para jogar pelo Time Mundo na Laver Cup. Acompanho o evento desde criança e sempre sonhei em participar. Estar em um time com jogadores como Fritz, Paul e Shelton, além de ser treinado por Agassi, é inacreditável. Vou dar tudo de mim”, disse Fonseca.
Time Europa terá Alcaraz como referência
O Time Europa, comandado por Yannick Noah, substituto de Bjorn Borg, também já tem nomes confirmados. O espanhol Carlos Alcaraz, campeão em Berlim no ano passado, será novamente o grande destaque. Ele estará ao lado de Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune e Casper Ruud.
Na última edição, Alcaraz entrou para a história ao conquistar sozinho oito pontos, ajudando a garantir mais um título para os europeus. A equipe soma cinco conquistas desde 2017, contra apenas duas do Time Mundo, que levantou a taça pela primeira vez em 2022.
Como funciona a Laver Cup?
A Laver Cup tem um formato diferenciado. São cinco sessões disputadas em três dias. Cada vitória vale um ponto na sexta-feira, dois pontos no sábado e três pontos no domingo. O primeiro time a atingir 13 pontos fica com o título. A edição de 2025 terá um sabor especial para os brasileiros, já que João Fonseca se junta a nomes consagrados em busca de mais uma chance histórica para o Time Mundo.
