The arrival of Liam Coen to the Jacksonville Jaguars already seems to be having an immediate impact on the team, and especially on quarterback Trevor Lawrence. After two complicated seasons, marked by a noticeable drop in performance and lingering injuries – including a concussion suffered against the Houston Texans – Lawrence now says he feels motivated, fully engaged, and adapting well to his coach’s new offensive system.
When Coen joined the Jaguars, his primary mission was clear: revive Lawrence. The team needed him to rediscover the elite level of play he displayed at Clemson and during his early years in Jacksonville. Early signs suggest that the goal is being accomplished, with the quarterback appearing much more comfortable operating within the newly implemented scheme.

Team insider Michael DiRocco, who closely follows the organization, has highlighted a particular aspect that could be decisive for Jacksonville’s success in the upcoming season.
DiRocco points out that the offensive line has been giving Lawrence more time to execute plays. This seemingly small but crucial difference could change everything for the Jaguars’ star quarterback.
One thing I’ve noticed in the first two preseason games: Trevor Lawrence has been able to step up in the pocket. Hadn’t been much space for that the past two seasons.
He noted.
The offensive line had been one of Jacksonville’s greatest weaknesses over the past two years. That lack of protection left Lawrence vulnerable to frequent injuries and forced him into rushed decisions, often preventing receivers from finishing their routes. With so little time, reading opposing defenses became nearly impossible
Now, with improved protection, Lawrence has been able to take advantage of the pocket, observe the field, and orchestrate plays with far more composure. If this trend continues, the Jaguars could finally provide their franchise quarterback the environment he needs to thrive.
Travis Hunter will be a key weapon for Lawrence
Adding to these improvements is the arrival of last season’s Heisman Trophy winner, wide receiver Travis Hunter, selected in the second round of the draft. His presence immediately expands Jacksonville’s offensive arsenal, giving Lawrence another dynamic target capable of producing big plays.
Hunter is a rare talent who can also play cornerback, excelling on both sides of the ball. However, with the Jaguars, he is expected to be used primarily as a receiver, allowing his skills to deliver immediate impact without the physical toll of playing two positions. His ability to create consistent yardage and stretch defenses could prove pivotal in securing critical wins, positioning Jacksonville as a legitimate postseason contender.
The Jaguars will open their 2025 season on September 7 against the Carolina Panthers. With one preseason game still left on the schedule, they have an opportunity to fine-tune details, and with Lawrence’s resurgence, improved protection, and new offensive weapons, Jacksonville fans are cautiously optimistic about what could be a breakthrough year.
