Colts shock NFL by naming Daniel Jones starting QB over Anthony Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts have dropped a bombshell on the NFL. Daniel Jones, the quarterback cut loose by the New York Giants just last year, has been named the starter in Indianapolis. The announcement leaves Anthony Richardson – once hailed as the future of the franchise – watching from the sidelines.

It’s a decision that flips the script. Richardson, a first-round pick in 2023, was supposed to be the man to lead the Colts back to glory. Instead, he has lost the battle in training camp to a player many believed was already finished at the top level.

Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts mascots get into a fight with 4th graders during an exhibition game

Head coach Shane Steichen was clear: Jones has earned it. “He’s the starting QB for the season,”Steichen said. “Both of them pushed hard, but Daniel controlled the offense better. That’s what tipped it.”

Jones, 28, has been fighting for his career since his fall from grace in New York. He once carried the Giants into the playoffs and looked like a star. Then came the injuries, the turnovers, and finally the humiliation of being demoted before asking for his release. After a short stop in Minnesota, Jones bet on himself with a $14 million deal in Indianapolis. Now he has his reward.

Richardson left in limbo

For Richardson, the verdict is brutal. He had the trust of late owner Jim Irsay, who called him the quarterback of the future. He had the draft pedigree. He had the physical gifts. But he does not have the job.

The last two years have been cruel. A shoulder injury cut short his rookie season. A year later, inconsistency and even a request to come out of a game for “tiredness” raised questions about his mentality. Now, at just 23, he must learn from the bench while the man labeled a castoff leads the team.

Steichen tried to soften the blow, insisting Richardson’s story is far from over. “He knows he needs to keep learning. He knows he’s one play away,”the coach said. “The locker room supports Daniel, but they also support AR. This is not the end.”

But the message is clear: the Colts are no longer waiting for Richardson to figure it out. They want stability. They want leadership. And they believe Jones can deliver it now.

A new test awaits

Since Andrew Luck’s shock retirement in 2019, Indianapolis has lived through a carousel of quarterbacks. Eleven different starters in six years. Now, Daniel Jones is the next to step into the chaos.

The Colts will open the season against the Miami Dolphins on September 7. If Jones shines, he could rebuild his reputation and silence his critics. If he fails, the calls for Richardson will grow louder by the week.

For now, though, the Colts have made their gamble. Jones is in charge. Richardson waits. And the NFL watches.

College Football Preview 2025: Miami (FL) Hurricanes

2024 Recap While Miami enjoyed its best season in seven years, 2024 still felt like the one that got away. Despite fielding the nation’s most efficient offense in terms of EPA per play and having future No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward at quarterback, the Hurricanes lost three games and missed out on both the ACC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff. The biggest culprit was the secondary, which ranked just 67th in team coverage grade last season. Ward is now with the Tennessee Titans, but Miami landed a top-tier replacement in Georgia transfer Carson Beck. The No. 3-ranked quarterback in the country owns a 90.9 grade since 2023, the second-best among all returning FBS quarterbacks. If the Hurricanes can develop reliable pass-catchers and the revamped secondary takes a step forward, they’ll be a top contender in the ACC. […]

How to bet on the Bills in 2025: Super Bowl odds, win total, props, best bets, picks for Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills enter the 2025 season with Super Bowl expectations, and most sportsbooks have the team near the top of their title odds ladders. The Bills have won the AFC East five years in a row and are heavy favorites to capture a sixth straight division crown this season but the ultimate goal is to get to the last game of the season. Buffalo has been unable to do that, losing twice in the AFC Championship Game and three times in the Divisional Round over the last five seasons. One big reason the Bills are expected to be contenders is the presence of quarterback Josh Allen, who is coming off a successful 2024 season where he captured his first MVP award. Allen is a strong contender to repeat as MVP at multiple sportsbooks. Head coach Sean McDermott is back as well, […]

Rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit says he feels his time in NFL was a waste of his talent

However, after one full season, he returned back across the pond to continue his rugby career."I just felt like I was kind of wasting my talent out there," Rees-Zammit said, via The Times. "It's very difficult to get into the NFL if you haven't gone through the college system. You just don't get the same opportunities as those boys. I was getting minimal reps, and it was just something that I was fed up with when I was practising there."Rees-Zammit played running back for the Chiefs and got some action as a kick returner in the 2024 preseason as well. However, he did not make the 53-man roster, and signed with […]
