Morgan Wallen sends a clear message to Kevin Stefanski with a gesture to Shedeur Sanders

Shedeur Sanders‘ rise to stardom has gone well beyond the football field. The Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback has not only made headlines with his arm and athleticism, but his now-signature wristwatch celebration, a subtle flex that signals it’s “Shedeur time”, has taken on a life of its own in popular culture.

Over the weekend, that cultural wave rolled right into the heart of country music. While performing in Cleveland on Saturday night, country megastar Morgan Wallen gave a nod to Sanders by striking the wristwatch pose for the crowd as he made his entrance.

The gesture, originally made famous during Sanders’ time at Colorado under his father, Deion Sanders, sent the stadium crowd into a frenzy. Wallen, decked out in Cleveland Browns gear, smiled as he tapped his wrist, signaling he was ready for showtime, just as Shedeur does after a clutch throw or a key touchdown.

A celebration born from prime-time pressure

Shedeur Sanders first brought the wristwatch gesture into the spotlight during his 2023 breakout season with the Colorado Buffaloes, where he thrived under immense national pressure and media attention. After dramatic comebacks or game-defining throws, Sanders would confidently point to his wrist, a symbolic reminder that when the moment matters most, it’s his time.

The celebration quickly went viral on social media, with fans and athletes mimicking the move during college football Saturdays. It later followed him to the NFL when he was drafted by the Browns, and his branding power has only grown from there.

Sanders’ marketing presence, paired with NIL deals, signature commercials, and family connections to football royalty, has positioned him as one of the sport’s most marketable young stars. The fact that a star like Wallen would use the celebration on stage speaks volumes about Shedeur’s crossover appeal.

Wallen, known for chart-topping hits like “Last Night” and “You Proof,” has deep ties to the sports world himself. A longtime football fan, he’s often seen attending SEC games and NFL matchups during the offseason. His performance in Cleveland was already a headline event, but his nod to Sanders made sure the buzz extended to the Browns fan base as well.

QB2 matchmaker: Finding landing spots for Jameis Winston and other expendable backups as roster cuts loom

The NFL is about to close the book on the preseason with the third and final installment of exhibitions on deck this weekend. Once those games conclude, the ball rolls into the hands of the front office, as they'll be tasked with whittling down the 90-man summer roster into the opening 53-man unit to begin the regular season. While most of the attention over this period will be paid to the departures, it's also a sneaky period for additions. The preseason can reveal some weaknesses on a given roster and teams could look to look to improve those areas by dipping into the trade market with teams that may have a surplus at those positions. For the team trading a player away, it's a win-win as it gets the franchise one step closer toward getting to the 53-man threshold while likely […]
