Este miércoles 20 de agosto se cumplen cinco años de la presentación oficial de Pedri con el Barcelona. El jugador canario fue fichado un año antes por cinco millones, procedente de la UD Las Palmas. El futbolista siguió jugando en el conjunto amarillo en calidad de cedido la temporada 19-20, pero ya en propiedad del Barça. Su gran papel en Segunda División hizo que Ronald Koeman apostase por él en la siguiente campaña.

Su desempeño en el club catalán le ha situado como uno de los mejores centrocampistas del mundo. Su calidad e inteligencia en el terreno de juego han sido clave en los títulos conseguidos por el Barça los últimos años. Dos Ligas, dos Copas del Rey y dos Supercopas de España en tan solo cinco temporadas en el club. También ha sido una pieza clave en la selección española, ganando una UEFA Nations League y una Eurocopa. Pero su camino hacia el éxito no ha sido fácil. Por el camino, el canario ha logrado superar muchas adversidades, siendo las lesiones su peor enemigo.

Un año con Messi

La llegada de Pedri a la Ciudad Condal no fue fácil. Aterrizó en el verano de 2020, con una temporada sin público por delante. El club vivía una situación convulsa, tanto deportiva como económica. El Barça cayó eliminado en Champions de la forma más cruel posible, encajando 8 goles del Bayern de Múnich. Pocas semanas después, Messi comunicó a la Junta Directiva su deseo de abandonar el Barcelona. Aunque finalmente el capitán se quedó, la plantilla sufrió un nuevo revés con la salida de Luis Suárez, quien no contaba para Koeman.

El curso arrancó y Pedri logró hacerse con un hueco en el once. Encontró en Messi su mejor aliado en el campo y el equipo pudo competir hasta el final de temporada. No se consiguió la Liga, pero sí la Copa del Rey. El joven canario, de tan solo 17 años entonces, ya pudo levantar su primer título con el Barça. Su extraordinaria actuación le sirvió para convencer a Luis Enrique y ser convocado así para la selección española.

Un verano que pasó factura

En 2021 se disputó la Eurocopa que se aplazó el año anterior por el covid-19. Pedri era claramente un referente para ese joven combinado de Luis Enrique. El conjunto español llegó hasta semifinales, perdiendo en la tanda de penaltis contra Italia. En el transcurso del torneo, el futbolista acumuló muchos minutos debido a las tres prórrogas de las eliminatorias. La situación se repitió en los Juegos Olímpicos, donde Pedri también acudió sin apenas descanso. España llegó a la final ante Brasil, obteniendo la medalla de plata.

Ese verano fue clave para la trayectoria del centrocampista. Pese a que Koeman le dio descanso las primeras jornadas de competición, su exceso de minutos le pasó factura en forma de diferentes lesiones que le apartaron del terreno de juego. Regresó al final de la temporada, ya con Xavi, y dejó momentos inolvidables para la afición culé: el caño a Balenziaga, el tanto en Turquía regateando a los defensas del Galatasaray sin tocar el balón o su gol frente al Sevilla recortando varias veces en la frontal.

Su calidad era innegable, pero las lesiones le impedían tener una continuidad necesaria para poder liderar al Barça. En los dos siguientes años, Pedri siguió acumulando lesiones, llegando muy justo a la Eurocopa del 2024. En octavos, una dura entrada de Toni Kroos lo dejó fuera de combate para lo que restaba de competición. Las dudas sobre su físico seguían creciendo.

La llegada de Flick

El técnico alemán llegó a Barcelona con fama de darle importancia al trabajo físico de sus jugadores. Y así fue. La temporada pasada se vio a un Pedri muy mejorado en este aspecto. El internacional español logró mantener su nivel durante todo el curso, sin tener que lamentar ninguna lesión. Fue uno de los líderes del equipo y un jugador fundamental en la consecución de los tres títulos que su club logró. Además, anotó un gol para el recuerdo en la final de Copa contra el Real Madrid. El mejor Pedri está presente y le queda mucho que ofrecer, tanto en el Barça como en la selección española.
