Marseille say they have transfer listed winger Jonathan Rowe and midfielder Adrien Rabiot as a result of what they describe as “unacceptable behaviour” from both players following their opening game of the Ligue 1 season.
Roberto de Zerbi’s side were beaten 1-0 by Rennes on Friday following an added-time winner from Ludovic Blas. Rennes had played the majority of the game with 10 players after defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal was sent off in the 31st minute.

According to a statement released by the club on Tuesday, Marseille have decided to sell Rowe and Rabiot, who both started the match, based on their reaction to the defeat in the changing room after full-time, with the players being informed of the situation earlier this week.
“Olympique de Marseille announces that Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe have been placed on the transfer list by the club,” the statement said.
“This decision was taken due to unacceptable behaviour in the dressing room after the match against Stade Rennais FC, in agreement with the technical staff and in accordance with the club’s internal code of conduct.
“The decision was communicated to the two players by the club on Monday.”

Both players have only been at Marseille for one season. Rowe joined in August last year from Championship side Norwich City on a season-long loan deal that contained an obligation to buy. The 22-year-old made 30 appearances in his first season in southern France, scoring four goals and providing four assists, but only started six matches.
This summer, Rowe was vital in England’s successful defence of their European Under-21 Championship title, scoring the winner in a 3-2 extra-time victory over Germany in the final.
Rabiot, 30, joined Marseille as a free agent in September after five years with Italian side Juventus. The France international was regular under De Zerbi in the 2024-25 season, starting 29 out of 31 games in all competitions and recording 10 goals and five assists.
He is a five-time Ligue 1 champion, winning the title in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 with Marseille’s rivals Paris Saint-Germain before joining Juventus.
Marseille finished second in the league last campaign, 19 points behind PSG, and qualified for this season’s Champions League. De Zerbi’s team have been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in CJ Egan-Riley and Angel Gomes on free transfers and signing Facundo Medina, Timothy Weah and Igor Paixao. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also rejoined the club after a season with Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah.
