Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was involved in an incident that caught all the media attention last weekend.
The game between The Indiana Fever and The Connecticut Sun was a bit overshadowed by a frightening moment where Sophie Cunningham had to leave the court due to a painful knee injury, after an unexpected colissio against Connecticut’s Bria Hartley.
Cunningham has talked for the first time since the incident happened. While some fans believe Hartley did it on purpose, Cunningham has stood up on her defense, saying it was not done with bad will.
She broke her silence
On her Show Me Something podcast, Cunningham shared that she and Hartley are close friends, which made the controversy kind of weird.
I know Bria, and I’m actually really good friends with Bria. I don’t think there was any ill intent. It was a basketball play. I was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time, she fell. There was no way she would intentionally try to hurt me. I have nothing but love for Bria
From social media backlash to a mother’s tweet
Things got worse after Cunningham’s mom, Paula, posted a tweet that she immediately took down. It called Hartley “plain mean” and “out of control.” Cunningham admitted that she had to ask her mom to remove the tweet.
I even told my mom because she tweeted something. I was like, ‘No Mom… Bria and I are super cool and she would never try to hurt me.’ I hope people stop giving Bria some heat
A viral picture from the game showed Hartley smiling after the colission, fueling all the hate and outrage Fever’s fans already had toward her. Cunningham dismissed that interpretation and claryfied it was more a wince than a smile, so there is no reason to hate on her.
Cunningham’s focus is on her recovery
Even though she will be out for the rest of the 2025 season, Cunningham stays upbeat. She said such bad luck is just part of the game and Hartley is not guilty for it.
It was just unfortunate. One of those moments that happens in sports. That’s all it was
Now that Cunningham will be out of the Fever’s squad for a while, it is time for the Indiana team to reconsider new tactics on her absence. Her leadership and talent will be missed, that is for sure, but now more doors will open. Now that Sophie removed all the controversy of her injury by defending Hartley, it is time for a healthier conversation about how the WNBA protect their players.
Important times come for The Fever
Cunningham plans to get back fully healed by the 2026 WNBA season. For now, she will cheer on her team from the stands as the Fever goes on without her. Playoff period approaches and the chances for the Fever to achieve good things seem closer and closer day by day.
Now that her teammate Cailtin Clark is also returning soon, the Fever must be smart and wise in the way they adapt to sudden changes. If all goes well, they will concentrate and compete like everyone is available.
