Štybar se pustil do Evenepoela ihned po jeho odstoupení z průběžné třetí příčky ve 14. etapě Tour, jelikož v tentýž den komentoval přenos pro britskou televizi TNT. A jeho kritika vzbudila u cyklistických fanoušků řadu souhlasných, ale i nesouhlasných reakcí.
Za svým názorem si 39letý rodák z Plané stojí i nyní. Navzdory tomu, že se Belgičan posléze rozpovídal o trápeních v přípravě i četných zdravotních problémech. „Když už víme okolnosti, situaci to trochu vysvětluje. Ale v daném momentu jsem byl přesvědčený, že měl zkusit dojet do cíle. A za tím si vlastně stojím i teď,“ prohlásil Štybar.
„I kdyby chytil 20 minut ztrátu, měl se s týmem rozhodovat až v cíli, jestli závod vzdá. Zbývala už jen nedělní etapa do volného dne. Šanci přežít do pondělí určitě měl, pak se mohl dát trochu do kupy,“ mínil Štybar.
Roli podle něj hrála očekávaná změna týmu. „Myslím, že měl v hlavě rozhodnutí, že odchází do Bory. Podle mě to musel vědět. S jeho charakterem psychicky náročná situace. Chtěl se rozloučit vítězstvím na Tour, nebo alespoň pódiem, ale věděl, že to už se nepovede,“ líčil trojnásobný mistr světa v cyklokrosu.
Evenepoel sice dokončí sezonu v dresu Soudal Quick-Step, ale od roku 2026 bude oblékat trikot Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe. Tomuto žhavému přestupu také Štybar příliš nerozumí. „Nevím, co dostane Remco lepšího v Boře než v Quick-Stepu. Asi obdrží víc peněz, ale základna je hodně podobná. Navíc si nejsem jistý, jestli mu bude sedět německý systém,“ nadhodil.
Německá stáj rovněž bude muset řešit výrazný přetlak elitních vrchařů. V týmu totiž setrvává zkušený Primož Roglič, Australan Jai Hindley, nadějný Ital Giulio Pellizzari nebo vycházející hvězda Florian Lipowitz, jenž na Tour udržel třetí příčku za Pogačarem a Vingegaardem. „Myslím, že v Boře se po Tour museli trochu poškrábat na hlavě. Přivedli Remca, ale mezitím Lipowitz skončil na pódiu. Sám jsem zvědavý, jak tohle ukočírují,“ poznamenal Štybar.
Největší tíhu však ponese právě Evenepoel. „Bude na něj obrovský tlak a jsem zvědavý, jak se s ním popere,“ řekl Štybar.
Zajímá ho také, jak si po odchodu největší hvězdy povede i jeho bývalý zaměstnavatel. Ve Vlčí smečce strávil Štybar dlouhých dvanáct let a belgický tým v počtu vítězství naprosto dominoval pelotonu.
V poslední době však z největší slávy ustoupil. „A to právě kvůli změnám v týmu. Quick-Step chtěl s Remcem vyhrát Tour de France, stál je spoustu peněž, a tak vedení nemohlo přivést další velká jména,“ vysvětloval vítěz etapy na Tour z roku 2015.
Nyní věří, že se Quick-Step vrátí zpátky do zajetých kolejí a bude znovu vyhrávat zejména velké klasiky. „Atmosféra se teď změní. Mohl by to znovu být tým jako dřív,“ dodal Štybar.
