Jednadvacetiletá Šalková (162. na světě) má v New Yorku poprvé nakročeno mezi 128 účastnic úvodní rundy. Ve dvouapůlhodinovém zápase s Běloruskou Kristinou Dmitrukovou (237.) předvedla spoustu chyb, ale i ohromnou vůli a neutuchající odvahu. Soupeřku nakonec udolala 6:3, 5:7, 7:6, když ve třetí sadě odvrátila čtyři mečboly.
Ve chvílích, kdy se ocitla na hraně, se opatrnicky nestáhla a do míčků prala s ještě větší vervou. Ve dvanácté hře rozhodující sady, která trvala jedenáct minut a stav šedl osmkrát přes shodu, se to vyplatilo náramně.
Mečbol č.1: Žádný zanďour. Šalková vyrazila na síť a na dvakrát zakončovala.
Mečbol č.2: Přidalo se i štěstí. Míček z české rakety lízl síť a následoval nechytatelný forhend. Nebylo divu, že soupeřka pak třískla raketou o kurt.
Mečbol č.3.: Šalková Dmitrukovou parádně rozběhala. Forhend, bekhend, forhend, nazdar!
Mečbol č.4: Zchvácená Běloruska už nemohla a bekhend poslala ven z kurtu.
Nezlomná Češka se pak v tie-breaku hraném do deseti bodů vyhrabala i ze stavu 1:4. Při svém aktivním stylu, kdy si jde neohroženě pro body, končila Šalková se 40 vítěznými údery a 58 nevynucenými chybami. A v pátek vyrazí do akce proti zkušené Kanaďance Rebecce Marinové. Hráčka Sparty měla zatím nejblíž k postupu do hlavní soutěže grandslamu loni v Austrálii, ale ve třetím kvalifikačním kole ve třech setech ztroskotala na domácí Storm Hunterové.
Proti další hráčce nastupující pod neutrální vlajkou uspěla i Valentová. Její duel s Ruskou Taťjanou Prozorovovou byl přerušen za stavu 4:5 v první sadě, ale v dohrávce jednoznačně kralovala osmnáctiletá sparťanka – 7:5, 6:1. A teď ještě potřebuje zabrat proti Arantxe Rusové z Nizozemska.

Česká naděje už letos v hlavní grandslamové soutěži debutovala na Roland Garros, kde se přes kvalifikaci dostala až do druhého kola proti pozdější šampionce Coco Gauffové. „Teď už vím, že se s top hráčkami dá hrát, že na to mám. Já si dřív myslela, že je to nereálné, ale teď jsem si řekla, že to jde,“ zářila v Paříži Valentová. „Je důležité vědět, že jim můžu konkurovat, jen musím zlepšit pár věcí.“
Semifinalistka pražského turnaje WTA postoupila už do první stovky žebříčku (94.), ale pořadí ještě na přímou účast mezi grandslamovou elitou nestačilo.
Třetí z českých zástupkyň ve druhém kole kvalifikace US Open Darja Viďmanová (170.) nestačila na ostřílenou Číňanku Čang Šuaj (4:6, 0:6). Blízko životnímu výsledku je ovšem 21letá rodačka z Olomouce Linda Klimovičová (188.), která od loňského října reprezentuje Polsko. K postupu do hlavní soutěže ve Flushing Meadows potřebuje ještě porazit Lotyšku Darju Semenistajovou.
