Frankie Montas’ rocky first season with the New York Mets came to an end Saturday when manager Carlos Mendoza announced he may need Tommy John surgery.
The struggling pitcher landed on the 15-day injured list ahead of the Mets’ game on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves with a right elbow UCL injury, the club said. The move is retroactive to Aug. 22. In Montas’ place, the Mets recalled right-handed reliever Huascar Brazobán.

“He’s got a pretty significant injury there,” said Mendoza. “We’ve got multiple doctors looking at it. The first read was he’s got a pretty big injury there.”
Previously, Montas, whom the Mets signed last December to a two-year guarantee worth $34 million, fumbled his spot in the starting rotation after producing a 6.38 ERA in eight games (36 2/3 innings), including one as a bulk reliever. Relegated to the bullpen shortly after his bulk appearance on Aug. 9, Montas made one relief outing, throwing two innings and allowing one run on Aug. 15.
Top pitching prospect Nolan McLean replaced Montas in the rotation, and on Friday, McLean became the first Mets starter other than David Peterson to complete at least six innings in a game since June 7. In a win over the Braves, he logged seven innings, allowing two runs. Through his first two starts totaling 12 1/3 innings, McLean has allowed just two runs. The Mets are leaning on McLean after not adding another starting pitcher at the trade deadline.
Instead, the Mets restocked their bullpen, adding three leverage relievers, which relegated Brazobán to Triple A. Brazobán cracked the Opening Day roster and posted a 3.83 ERA in 51 2/3 innings. With Syracuse, the Mets wanted Brazobán to get stretched out. He threw as many as 2 1/3 innings on Aug. 12. He last pitched on Aug. 20, throwing two innings.
In an interview with The Athletic on Aug. 14, Montas took ownership of his poor season — adding he couldn’t blame it on health issues — and said he wanted to help the Mets in any role.
Montas, 32, didn’t make his season debut until June 24 after suffering a lat injury during spring training.
