It wasn’t the storybook ending Shedeur Sanders had envisioned for his first home game in a Cleveland Browns uniform.
Still, the crowd at Huntington Bank Field made it clear that he has already earned a place in their hearts.
The 23-year-old quarterback, son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, entered the league with plenty of buzz following his collegiate career at Colorado.
But after sliding to the fifth round of the draft, Sanders has carried himself with poise, focusing on proving his worth through hard work.
His first preseason start showcased that potential, as he threw for 138 yards on 14-of-23 passing with two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Unfortunately, injuries and inconsistency disrupted his preseason rhythm. After missing a game with an oblique injury, Sanders finally returned for Cleveland‘s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams.
Before kickoff, his arrival at the stadium was memorable in itself, his mother, Pilar Sanders, and sister, Shelomi, showed up in custom “12” jerseys, turning his entrance into a family celebration.
Struggles on the field, love from the stands
Once Sanders finally took the field in the second half, replacing starter Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, things quickly turned rough.
The Rams defense swarmed him, and Sanders finished the night just 3-of-6 passing for 14 yards while being sacked five times. One of those sacks, a brutal 23-yard loss, summed up the frustrations of his night.
To add to the sting, head coach Kevin Stefanski pulled Sanders late in the fourth quarter, even with the game still within reach. The rookie’s disappointment was visible, but Stefanski defended him afterward, saying, “He’s a competitor.”
The Dawg Pound, however, wasn’t about to let their young quarterback leave on a sour note. Fans cheered him on as he walked back to the locker room, their support bringing out Sanders’ signature smile after a game he would probably like to forget.
That outpouring of love showed just how much belief the Cleveland faithful already have in him, struggles or not.
Looking ahead to the regular season
For now, Sanders‘ role is uncertain. Flacco, the veteran who revitalized the Browns with a playoff push two seasons ago, is expected to start Week 1 when the team hosts the Cincinnati Bengals on September 7.
Sanders, meanwhile, may spend more time developing from the sidelines.
Still, the preseason made one thing clear: Browns fans are already imagining a future with Shedeur Sanders as QB1.
His combination of resilience, family support, and flashes of talent has created a buzz in Cleveland that no box score can erase.
No matter when his next opportunity comes, the rookie has already built a bond with the Dawg Pound, one that could shape the next chapter of Browns football.
