Sedmadvacetiletý Otruba ze španělského týmu Caja Rujal se při premiéře na Grand Tour ukázal v dobrém světle hned ve druhé etapě. Vydal se před peloton a šlapal v celodenním úniku. Ve čtyřčlenné a později jen tříčlenné skupině byl aktivní, přesto bylo jasné, že peloton s elitními vrchaři si uprchlíky pohlídá a nepustí je k překvapivé výhře.
Hlavní skupinu při prudkém dešti zbrzdil hromadný karambol v pelotonu, který odstartoval pád britského šikuly Toma Pidcocka. Za ním se na zem poroučel takřka celý vlak Vismy včetně Vingegaarda, jenž se však rychle zvedal a bez problémů pokračoval. „Byl to celkem tvrdý pád. Ale naštěstí jsem se na mokru spíš sklouzl ani se tolik nepotloukl. Mám jen pár modřin,“ prozradil 28letý Dán.
Rozhodovalo se tak až v jediném stoupání dne v Limone Piemonte. Vepředu dlouho šlapal tým Lidl-Trek pro Cicconeho, který si chystal drtivý finiš. „Byl jsem sice trochu přivřený a už jsem ztratil svůj tým. Ale nohy jsem neměl špatné, ještě jsem to zkusil, jen těsně to nevyšlo,“ lamentoval 30letý Ital, kterému k velkému vítězství a zisku červeného trikotu chyběly centimetry.
Na poslední chvíli se totiž přes něj prodral Vingegaard. „Snažil jsem se za ním vyvézt. Před poslední zatáčkou už jsem si myslel, že ho nezvládnu předjet. Ale nakonec zbýval do cíle větší kus, než jsem čekal,“ líčil dánský favorit, jenž se tak posunul do průběžného vedení už po druhé etapě. „Sice jsme se na etapu tolik nesoustředili, ale byla by škoda nechat si tuhle příležitost uniknout. Takže když jsem viděl šanci, tak jsem ji vzal. Jsem rád i za červený trikot,“ podotkl.

Přece jen jsem na vítězství čekal už nějakou dobu,“ uvědomoval si Vingegaard, jenž se při své třetí účasti na Vueltě raduje potřetí.
Překvapivou třetí pozicí se po protrápené sezoně blýskl Francouz David Gaudu, čtvrtý dojel Kolumbijec Egan Bernal. Dvě sekundy ztratili další favorité Joao Almeida, Felix Gall, Jai Hindley nebo Juan Ayuso.
V neděli je na programu kopcovitá etapa o necelých 135 kilometrech stále na italské půdě ze San Maurizio Canavese do Ceres.
