Aaron Rodgers’ brief tenure with the New York Jets is hard to forget. From the injury that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season to his underwhelming performance in 2024, fans undoubtedly expected more-prompting the 21-year veteran to offer a heartfelt apology.
The past two years have been anything but easy for Rodgers. The Achilles tendon injury that forced him into an arduous rehabilitation process, combined with the Jets’ disappointing 5-12 record last season, pushed him to the brink of retirement.
After months of deliberation, the Super Bowl XLV champion ultimately chose to delay retirement for another year, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Thanks to the quirks of NFL scheduling, Rodgers will face his former team in Week 1. Just days before the matchup, he took a moment to make peace with Jets fans.
Rodgers apologizes to Jets fans
In a recent interview with Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio, the Steelers quarterback expressed regret over his time in New York.
“I really wanted to win there. I really did,” said the future Hall of Famer. “I have a lot of appreciation for the special moments.”
He acknowledged that his short stint didn’t allow for many of those moments. One of the most memorable-his debut with the team in 2023-ended abruptly after just four plays due to injury.
“Running down that field… it was a special night. And even though it ended very shortly thereafter, that’ll always be kind of a special snapshot.”
Rodgers said his Achilles tear was one of his biggest regrets, but he fought hard to return that same season.
“I tore my Achilles and battled my ass off to come back to practice, to inspire the guys, and hoped to come back,” he said, reiterating his gratitude for the “special moments we had together.”
Week 1 game won’t be a rematch
Despite the media buzz surrounding the September 7 game against the Jets, Rodgers dismissed the idea of it being a “revenge” matchup-especially given the team’s many changes.
“I have friendships over there, but it’s one game out of 17. And, you know, at 5 p.m. ET that Sunday, it’s just getting on to the next game. So that’s just the way it is,” he emphasized.
Now, all eyes will be on MetLife Stadium to see how New York fans respond to the return of their former star.
