This week brought major movement for the Buffalo Bills. With the deadline to finalize the 53-man roster, head coach Sean McDermott made several eyebrow-raising decisions, while strengthening the practice squad was also seen as a strategic move.
Still, concerns linger about the team’s depth. While new acquisitions might add value to the roster, doubts remain about the secondary, where injuries have created uncertainty.

A
concern for the Bills heading into Week 1
Cornerback Tre’Davious White was present at Buffalo’s latest practice, though he only observed. He is still recovering from a lower-leg injury that has kept him sidelined.
General manager Brandon Beane admitted the team is concerned about White’s status but remains hopeful he could improve enough this week to play in the opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
I’m sure as we get into next week, Wednesday, I think, is the first day that an injury report will be due. So we’ll see what it is. Whether he can practice any or not or what that looks like at that time.
Beane explained.
The Bills also face another pressing issue: uncertainty about cornerback Maxton Hairwell. His return is tentatively projected for Week 5 of the 2025 season, but that timeline remains fluid.
To counter these concerns, Buffalo has added veterans Jordan Poyer and Jordan Phillips. Both joined the organization this year and are expected to provide leadership and stability. McDermott will need to juggle rotations to avoid a drop-off in the defensive backfield’s quality.
Although Poyer and Phillips are currently on the practice squad, their presence is valuable. Poyer, who briefly left the franchise to join the Miami Dolphins, has returned, and his experience will allow McDermott to call upon him when needed. His leadership could prove crucial for keeping the defense cohesive.
They’re selfless. Of course, they’re competitive. If their number’s called, they’re going to go out there and do their best. But they also understand, it’s do whatever it takes.
Beane emphasized.
More roster moves from the Bills
Among the cuts, McDermott released linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio, the team’s 160th pick in the 2024 Draft. His stint in Buffalo lasted just one year. As a rookie, he appeared in four games, recording six tackles and one pass deflection, while also contributing on special teams.
Ulofoshio’s versatility was valued, but McDermott ultimately opted to move on. His departure, however, did not leave him without a team for long. He quickly joined the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad, offering him another chance to prove himself.
The Bills will open the 2025 season on Sunday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens. The matchup promises high intensity, pitting two of the era’s premier quarterbacks against each other in what could become an offensive shootout.
