The Colorado Buffaloes will kick off the 2025 season this Friday against Georgia Tech. It will mark Deion Sanders’ third year at the helm, a campaign in which the program hopes to replicate, at the very least, last season’s performance. And during this time, there is something that happens at Folsom Field whenever the Buffaloes are playing, something Sanders still has not quite gotten over. It always makes him laugh, because in the second quarter of every game, a particular and rather unique occurrence leaves everyone in the stands bursting out in laughter.
That curiosity is the unmistakable smell of marijuana that suddenly spreads through the stadium air, creating an atmosphere unlike any other and making the games even more entertaining.

The peculiarity has become an unofficial tradition among Colorado students. It is by no means sanctioned, but it adds a distinct, characteristic flavor to the Buffaloes’ home games.
Asked about it in an interview with CBS, Sanders explained the phenomenon with his trademark lightheartedness and humor, which only made the story more endearing.
The smell of weed in the second quarter surprised the heck out of me like every game I’m like, ‘Dang.’ … It seems like it’s like a light up quarter. You know what I’m saying? So is this the quarter that y’all chose? I’m serious. It’s a TV timeout. It never fails. And I’m like wow! What’s going on?
Sanders said, before continuing.
Because I’ve never been high a day in my life so that’s kind of new to me.
At first, the former NFL cornerback admitted it caught him completely off guard. It was something he had never experienced before, but now it has become almost routine. For the students, it seems to be a common practice, one deeply rooted in Colorado’s culture.
QB1 chosen for the Buffaloes by Deion Sanders
The Buffaloes are fully prepared to open their 2025 campaign against Georgia Tech, a game in which betting markets list them as 4.5-point underdogs.
To lead the offense, Deion Sanders has placed his trust in Kaidon Salter. The head coach confirmed that Salter will be the starting quarterback, tasked with filling the void left by Shedeur
Sanders following his departure to the NFL with the Cleveland Browns.
The kid has a ton of experience, dual threat, can throw the heck out of the ball as well. He’s the guy at this point. … He’s done it before. This is not his first time running out the tunnel and getting the start. … I like what he did in the spring, and he’s growing and growing and growing.
Sanders explained.
Last season, Colorado finished with a 9-4 record. The program now aims to improve upon that mark and secure another bowl game appearance.
