Parental support is always welcome, but there comes a time when adult children must step out of the shadow and learn to overcome life’s challenges independently. That is the case with Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, sons of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.
Carrying the weight of their father’s fame has often created more obstacles than advantages for the young men striving to establish their own names in the league. Former wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh believes it is time for them to sever the protective cord and face professional football without relying on their father’s constant presence.
Cam Ward doesn’t hold back on Shedeur Sanders as forgotten No.1 pick faces media spotlight gap
Deion, you do want your kids to have some type of adversity.”…”But what type of adversity are they going through when you’ve gone through the adversity for them in your life so they don’t have to?” he asked. His concern was not about talent or character, but about readiness for a league known for its unforgiving nature. “And so you can just try to challenge him as much as possible and hope the upbringing doesn’t give him a sense of entitlement, a sense of ‘I’m going to get this because of my father.’
First steps toward independence: Shedeur leads the way
When Shedeur Sanders was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, he made a request to his father: not to visit him at training camp. He wanted to walk his path alone, confront difficulties, and discover how to succeed without outside intervention. Shortly after, Shilo followed his younger brother’s example, signaling that he too was ready to move forward independently.
We have to grow up and do things on our own… it’s time to grow and to figure things out and go through the grind.
Houshmandzadeh clarifies his comments
To ensure his words were not misinterpreted, Houshmandzadeh emphasized his respect for Deion’s sons.
Shedeur seems like a good kid. He really does. He seems like a good-hearted person, and that’s all I care about.”…”Treat people. I tell my son this every single day. You better treat people how you want to be treated. Period.” He called Shedeur “a good human being,” but offered the necessary caveat for a rookie: “On the football field. That’s to be determined.
Deion remains ever watchful in his prayers
The Sanders brothers faced rough patches in recent games. Shedeur struggled with heavy defensive pressure in his final preseason appearance, limiting his performance. Shilo endured a worse fate, being ejected after punching an opposing Bills player. He was later released by the Buccaneers and is now a free agent.
When news broke of Shilo’s release, Deion quickly voiced his support.
He’s my son, and I’m proud of my kids, all of them.”…”praying that he gets another opportunity to go with a team.
If not, Sanders said Shilo already has plans beyond football.
“Shilo’s a man of many talents… he’s going to be straight. All the Sanders are going to be straight with or without football, you better believe that.
Deion’s love for his children is unquestionable. But stepping aside publicly, even slightly, may allow them the space to grow and succeed on their own terms.
