Dois meses depois de deixar o Flamengo, Gerson pode ser negociado pelo Zenit. Segundo informações do jornalista Fabrizio Romano, o Al-Ittihad iniciou conversas com o clube russo pela contratação do atleta de 28 anos. Até o momento não há nenhum acordo entre as partes, mas as tratativas seguem e novidades podem ocorrer ao longo das próximas horas.
Entre os torcedores do Rubro-Negro, a eventual movimentação no mercado indica uma gestão de carreira ruim por parte dos representantes do jogador da seleção brasileira. Para estes foi uma decisão equivocada já quando aceitou a oferta da equipe do leste europeu por questões financeiras. O pai e empresário, Marcão, foi duramente criticado.
No X (antigo Twitter), são muitas manifestações de flamenguistas lamentando as escolhas que podem prejudicá-lo, inclusive, ao pleitear um lugar entre os selecionados para a Copa do Mundo 2026. “A pior decisão da história”, resumiu um adepto rubro-negro.
Na última convocação de Carlo Ancelotti, para os jogos contra Chile e Bolívia pelas Eliminatórias, Gerson foi uma das ausências. Para alguns, é um alerta que pode custar sua presença na disputa do próximo Mundial.

Capitão do Flamengo e imprescindível na equipe comandada por Filipe Luís, Gerson aceitou a proposta do Zenit pouco antes da disputa do Mundial de Clubes. Na ocasião, a equipe russa pagou a multa de 25 milhões de euros (R$ 160 milhões). O Rubro-Negro, que nada poderia fazer, apenas agradeceu ao atleta pelo período em que esteve na Gávea, fundamental em muitas conquistas.

Nas duas passagens pelo Flamengo, Gerson realizou 253 partidas, com 155 vitórias, 50 empates e 48 derrotas. Ao todo, o meia anotou19 gols, o último ocorreu em sua última partida que marcou a eliminação para o Bayern nas oitavas da Copa de Clubes.
Com a camisa 8 rubro-negra, o atleta alcançou a marca de 12 títulos: Libertadores (2019), Brasileirão (2019 e 2020), Copa do Brasil (2024), Supercopa (2020, 2021 e 2025), Recopa Sul-Americana (2020) e Carioca (2020, 2021, 2024 e 2025).
