The offseason was full of attention and hype surrounding Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning. Even before the season began, he was already projected as the potential No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Sportsbooks had listed him as a favorite for that future honor. But following such a mediocre debut performance, expectations may now cool slightly, offering a more grounded perspective on his current reality.
On the field, Manning’s outing was disastrous and frustrating. The quarterback failed to lead any sustained offensive drives. The Ohio State Buckeyes’ defense looked overwhelming; they barely allowed him to breathe.

In the second half, it seemed the stern words from head coach Steve Sarkisian might spark a turnaround, but there was not enough execution to change the outcome. Ultimately, the Longhorns fell 14-7. It was a game dominated by defense and scarce scoring.
Manning finished with uninspiring numbers: completing just 18 of 30 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. At the final whistle, Sarkisian urged patience, asking for time to let his young quarterback grow into the role. Manning had looked indecisive and inaccurate, forcing plays that revealed his inexperience.
For Arch, the expectations were out of control on the outside.”… “I’d say let’s finish the book before we judge him. That’s one chapter.

The criticism comes quickly
With so much anticipation surrounding his debut, Manning entered the season under a glaring spotlight. Analysts and commentators were eager to scrutinize, debate, and even dismantle his performance.
That criticism arrived swiftly. While Manning’s play was far from impressive, some argue the intensity of the backlash was excessive.
Veteran voices like Shannon Sharpe and Johnny Manziel delivered harsh assessments of the young quarterback’s first game.
Arch Manning struggled in his debut against Ohio State, with scouts and more than a dozen NFL teams watching, including the nearby Cleveland Browns. Manning was inconsistent. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown, and an interception; a very underwhelming day for a player some have pegged as the number one pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Sharpe remarked.
Manziel, meanwhile, struck a slightly different tone, emphasizing the context.
Hey, let’s not make too much of it. I mean, listen, I think as an overall, as a player, like, these are the things you start early in the season.”… “I was talking to Jake Spavital… and he’s just like, ‘Man, we can’t run the ball.’ And there are certain things early on in the season where you need more reps, more game reps, and more live speed reps.
This isn’t Louisiana Monroe… this is the defending, reigning, really good Ohio State football team. You’re not just playing a red dot.
Manning responds to his rough start
Manning himself acknowledged his shortcomings and vowed to improve through hard work.
Ultimately, not good enough. Obviously, you don’t want to start off the season going 0-1. They’re a good team, but I thought we beat ourselves a lot. That starts with me. I’ve got to play better for us to win.
Coach Sarkisian later noted that Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia had made life extremely difficult for his quarterback.
He was struggling to see some things early. They’ve got a smart secondary and a good scheme. They made Arch work.
