Crystal Palace are hopeful that Adam Wharton will be out for only three weeks with an adductor injury.
Wharton was named in the England squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Andorra and Serbia but was forced to withdraw after being substituted in the second half of Palace’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 21-year-old midfielder could return sooner, with the prognosis that he is expected to be absent for two to three weeks after scans showed that he had tweaked his right adductor, with fears of a more serious injury and prolonged absence allayed.
Given his history of injuries and importance to the team, Palace are likely to be cautious instead of rushing him back in the shorter timeframe.
Meanwhile, team-mate Ismaila Sarr will miss Senegal’s qualifying matches against DR Congo and South Sudan with a grade two hamstring tear.
A grade two hamstring tear, which is a non-precise definition of a partial tear of the muscle, typically requires a recovery time of three to eight weeks.
“We had to pay the bill today with two muscle injuries,” Glasner said in his post-match press conference.
“Ismaila with a hamstring and Adam the adductor. Hopefully, it’s not too serious. We will make scans tomorrow so they can’t go to the national teams and then let’s see.
“But all the other (players) I think you could see the energy level today and it was no surprise for me because they are always doing this rhythm in regular weeks so it’s not unusual.”
Wharton has played once for England, coming off the bench to play 28 minutes against Bosnia & Herzegovina last June in a Euro 2024 warm-up match. He was part of Gareth Southgate’s squad which finished runners-up in the competition last summer, although he did not make an appearance.
However, a groin problem sustained during that tournament caused him problems in the early part of the season before worsening in Palace’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Villa in October last year. After undergoing surgery he was slower to recover than anticipated after setbacks, but made his return in February, featuring regularly in the season’s run-in.
Wharton has been an integral part of Palace’s team since his move from Blackburn Rovers in January 2024 and there will be relief that his injury is not as serious as it might have been.
Sarr has thrived in the right-sided No 10 role, also scoring against Villa on Sunday, and his injury may cause more concern.
