The New York Giants have publicly revealed a surprising twist in their quarterback pecking order for the 2025 season – rookie Jaxson Dart has been officially listed as QB2, ahead of veteran Jameis Winston, on the team’s Week 1 unofficial depth chart.
Even though head coach Brian Daboll has remained tight-lipped heading into the season opener, all signs point to Dart being the primary backup to starter Russell Wilson.
The Giants‘ depth chart released on Tuesday confirms Dart‘s elevated position, while Winston will serve as the third-string option.
A vote of confidence in the rookie’s trajectory
This development marks a rapid ascent for Dart, the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss.
During the preseason, Dart displayed impressive accuracy and poise – finishing 32-of-47 for 372 passing yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, plus a rushing score. The Giants clearly took notice, as he frequently handled second-team reps down the stretch.
In contrast, Winston was expected to settle into the backup role based on experience. However, Dart‘s strong camp performance appears to have flipped the script.
Daboll has emphasized that while the depth chart is unofficial, the actual roster decision will become clear when the Week 1 inactive list is released.
For a recovering franchise trying to find stability, Dart‘s elevation is a thrilling sign of youth movement. His play this preseason echoed comparisons to how QB transitions occurred with coaches who successfully developed rookies before.
With the opener approaching, all eyes will be on Dart’s readiness – whether he stands by as a reliable second option or executes should the Giants opt to let Wilson rest or falter.
One thing is clear: the quarterback competition in New York is suddenly much more than just depth – it’s a storyline worth watching as the season unfolds.
