The 37-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens was validation for the Kansas City Chiefs after a shaky start to the season. But as the team celebrated its second win of the season, defensive tackle Chris Jones was going through a tough personal time, and head coach Andy Reid didn’t hesitate to send a heartfelt message to him.
With each passing game, the Chiefs are looking more like the team that won Super Bowls LVII and LVIII back-to-back. After losing their first two games of the season, the team pulled off a tough win over the New York Giants in Week 3 and routed the Ravens this Sunday.
What fans didn’t know is that while the team was suiting up to face Baltimore, Jones was flying back from Mississippi to attend his aunt’s funeral. Despite the difficult moment, the defensive star didn’t want to miss the game, and Reid widely acknowledged it.
Reid’s emotional message to Jones
In the postgame press conference, Reid reminded everyone that situations like these take priority. “I mean, that’s not something you’re planning or anything else,” the coach admitted. “So, you take care of that first, and then the game’s game comes secondary when you start dealing with life and death.”
Jones was listed on the injury report as “non-injury related – personal,” and the team arranged a flight plan for him to return in time for the game. “He had to do what he had to do there,” Reid explained.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes also had words of appreciation for Jones, saying, “We were praying for Chris and we love him.” He said his teammate’s grief “made guys step up and want to play even harder for him. It speaks to the brotherhood we have in the locker room.”
Jones put in a great performance against the Ravens
The star defensive end agreed with his quarterback, saying, “It felt fun to be back on the field with my brothers, enjoying the win, the atmosphere, feeling the energy here.” He admitted he was overcome with emotion, but recalled that football has always been an outlet for him.
Jones arrived 20 minutes before the scheduled 4:25 p.m. ET kick-off, but that didn’t stop him from putting in a stellar performance. In total, Jones contributed two QB hits, a tackle for loss, and a pass deflection, cementing the Chiefs’ 37-20 victory over the Ravens.
