El presidente de la RFEC, José Vicioso, atiende a MARCA este lunes por la mañana en la recepción del hotel de Kigali para hacer balance de unos Mundiales exitosos para España. Entre el rumor de las maletas que van y vienen por los pasillos del hotel, todavía con la emoción de las medallas recientes, Vicioso desgrana sensaciones. Orgullo, cierta amargura por la mala fortuna de los jóvenes y la firme convicción de que España vive un momento de despegue en todas las disciplinas ciclistas.
¿Qué balance hace de estos Mundiales en Kigali?
La verdad que bastante satisfactorio, estamos muy contentos con el resultado. Desde que llegué al mandato la premisa era clara: trabajar para los deportistas. Con el potencial que tenemos, era el momento de poner todo de nuestra parte. Se ha hecho un gran trabajo estos nueve meses. Vinimos con el máximo de corredores pese a que había selecciones que no podían asumir los costes. Apostamos desde el inicio por la línea deportiva y se está cumpliendo, no solo en carretera, también en pista, BMX y trial.

De 0 a 10, ¿qué nota les pone a estos Mundiales?
Es el mejor resultado de la historia de la Federación. Muy positivo. Queda la espina de la caída de Benjamín Noval, que sin duda hubiese sido campeón del mundo. Ver a un chaval de 16 años llorar desconsolado fue lo más cruel. Aun así tiene un futuro muy prometedor.

El deporte femenino ha brillado con las cuatro medallas.
Está en auge. Todos debemos estar orgullosos porque hay un trabajo detrás muy importante. Ha habido un cambio generacional y ya veíamos que los resultados iban a llegar. Es histórico para el ciclismo femenino español y hay que seguir apostando fuerte.

¿Cómo valora el estreno de Valverde como seleccionador?
Muy positivo. La categoría profesional es distinta, los corredores tienen claro a qué vienen y lo que necesitan es apoyo. En Kigali Juan Ayuso estuvo muy comprometido y su octava posición en una carrera tan exigente es para estar satisfechos.

¿Por qué no se cubre la plaza de Iván Romeo en el Europeo de crono?
Es una cuestión técnica que corresponde responder al director técnico. Sí nos preocupa la cercanía entre Mundial y Europeo, con tantos vuelos y riesgo de perder equipaje. Lo sufren todas las federaciones.
¿Cómo es esa odisea de viajes?
Para que se haga una idea, aquí desplazamos a 64 personas y en el Europeo serán unas 80. La logística es compleja. A la ida se extraviaron 30 bultos, incluso bicicletas de contrarreloj. Son cosas que no podemos evitar, pero preocupan.

Más allá del Europeo, ¿qué retos quedan en 2025?
Queda el Mundial de trial y arranca el ciclocross, donde hay ilusión con Felipe Orts. También se trabaja en el Campeonato de España de ruta, con Sabiñánigo como sede más probable y los dos mundiales de pista en Río (paralímpico) y Chile (élite).
¿Cómo valora el peso de España aquí en los Mundiales y en la UCI? ¿Ha afectado lo ocurrido en LaVuelta?
España es un país puntero, eso no hay que discutirlo. Es una nación con muchísima tradición ciclista y que apuesta fuerte por este deporte. A nivel deportivo gozamos de buena consideración y aquí hemos recibido bastantes felicitaciones. Pero es cierto que, con lo sucedido en LaVuelta, en algunos momentos nos hemos sentido un poco incómodos, incluso en el punto de mira tanto por parte de la UCI como de otras federaciones. Eso preocupa, porque creo que el deporte y la política deberían ir por caminos separados. Hemos respirado cierta incomodidad, sí, pero confiamos en que esto quede atrás. España seguirá apostando por el ciclismo como siempre lo ha hecho. Somos un gran país, organizador de grandes eventos, y en eso no hay ninguna duda. Lo que ocurrió en LaVuelta lo consideramos un incidente, y estoy convencido de que pronto volveremos a sacar pecho.

¿Cómo es la relación con Javier Guillén y LaVuelta?
Excelente. La Federación siempre se puso a su disposición y le hemos apoyado en todo lo posible. He intentado estar cerca en muchas etapas para mostrar respaldo.
¿Podrá organizar España un Mundial?
A corto plazo no lo veo. Es muy costoso y la administración ahora no apuesta por esa línea. Nuestro gran objetivo es la Ciudad del Ciclismo, un proyecto muy avanzado que quedará como legado para los deportistas.

Lo principal era reforzar la parte deportiva y de estructura. En ocho meses se han hecho cambios importantes que los corredores agradecen. Se sienten felices y orgullosos de venir con la Selección.
¿Un Mundial con cuatro medallas sigue siendo deficitario?
Sí, es una pena. El esfuerzo económico es enorme y los premios muy escasos para los corredores. La UCI debería hacer autocrítica y gratificar más a los ciclistas.

Simplemente que seguiremos trabajando para que no les falte nada a nuestros deportistas.
