Grupo de atletas pede à Uefa suspensão de Israel devido à guerra em Gaza

Uma coalizão formada por 50 atletas profissionais assinou uma carta endereçada à Uefa pedindo a suspensão de Israel de todas as competições europeias. Entre os nomes estão o meio-campista do Crystal Palace, Cheick Doucouré, o marroquino Hakim Ziyech, o francês Paul Pogba e o jogador de críquete inglês Moeen Ali. A mobilização foi articulada pela Nujum Sports, entidade que representa atletas muçulmanos no Reino Unido, em parceria com o movimento Athletes 4 Peace.

No documento, os atletas afirmam que o esporte não pode ficar em silêncio enquanto atletas e civis, incluindo crianças, são mortos indiscriminadamente em massa em Gaza. A carta também presta homenagem a Suleiman al-Obeid, conhecido como “Pelé Palestino”, morto em agosto pelas forças israelenses, segundo a Associação Palestina de Futebol.

O texto cita ainda um relatório da ONU, de setembro, que acusou Israel de agir com “intenção genocida” contra os palestinos em Gaza, alegação negada por autoridades israelenses. “É uma obrigação dos órgãos esportivos tomar medidas contra equipes esportivas que representam um país que, segundo uma comissão das Nações Unidas, está cometendo genocídio contra palestinos em Gaza”, diz o documento.

Os atletas pedem que Israel seja suspenso até cumprir o direito internacional e encerrar o que classificam como “matança de civis e fome generalizada”.

“O esporte não é neutro diante da injustiça. Permanecer em silêncio é aceitar que a vida de alguns vale menos que a de outros”, conclui a carta.

A pressão ocorre após membros do Conselho de Direitos Humanos da ONU e a Federação Palestina de Futebol cobrarem medida semelhante nos últimos congressos da Fifa. Apesar das reivindicações, clubes e seleções israelenses continuam disputando torneios. Desde os ataques liderados pelo Hamas em 7 de outubro de 2023, porém, nenhuma partida tem sido realizada em território israelense.

Na última quinta-feira, o governo do presidente dos EUA, Donald Trump, afirmou que trabalhará para impedir qualquer tentativa de banimento de Israel da Copa do Mundo de 2026. O conflito já deixou, segundo autoridades locais, mais de 60 mil palestinos mortos em Gaza desde o início da ofensiva terrestre israelense.
