With the Los Angeles Lakers set to open their 2025-26 NBA season in just a few weeks, one of the league’s biggest questions continues to hover around the future of LeBron James.
At 40 years old and entering his 22nd season, speculation around his retirement continues to build.
LeBron James reveals the year he signed his first autograph
One of the more recent theories among fans and pundits suggested that LeBron might try to stay in the league long enough to eventually play alongside his younger son, Bryce James, just as he has begun doing with his older son, Bronny James.
However, during Lakers media day, LeBron made it clear that he’s not planning his NBA exit based on Bryce’s timeline.
“I’m not waiting on Bryce. He has his own timeline, I got my timeline,” James said, according to Oh No He Didn’t via X (formerly Twitter).
LeBron’s Current Focus Is on the Present, Not the Future
This firm statement from LeBron adds clarity to what has been a swirling narrative ever since Bryce James emerged as a potential NBA prospect.
Currently a freshman at the University of Arizona, Bryce has not yet played his first college game, making it far too early to predict his trajectory into the professional ranks.
While he carries the famous family name and undeniable talent, his path is still unfolding.
On the other hand, Bronny James made NBA history earlier this year when the Lakers selected him in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
In the opening game of the current season, LeBron and Bronny officially became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game together, a historic milestone for both the league and the James family.
Despite the joy of playing alongside his eldest son, LeBron has consistently maintained that his long-term decisions will be based on his body, performance, and motivation, not necessarily on his sons’ careers.
This offseason, James exercised his player option with the Lakers, ensuring his presence in Los Angeles through the 2025-26 season.
The team, which has had its share of roster shuffling, also re-signed key players and is counting on more support around their veteran superstar. With Luka Doncic reportedly taking on more offensive responsibilities this season, James may benefit from a slightly reduced workload as he manages his body through another long campaign.
The Lakers will open their season at home against the Golden State Warriors on October 22 at 10:00 PM ET at Crypto.com Arena.
With both teams eager to start strong, all eyes will once again be on LeBron James, but not because of his retirement plans or family future.
For now, the focus remains on the season ahead, where James continues to defy time, adding to a career that has already cemented him as one of the greatest to ever play the game. As he put it, he’s following his own timeline, wherever it may lead.
