New York Giants president and co-owner John Mara has announced he is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.
The 70-year-old, who has served as one of the NFL’s most influential executives, issued a public statement on Monday addressing his health, reassuring fans and the football world that he remains optimistic and intends to continue his role with the team.

“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” John Mara said in the statement. “I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome.
I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support, personally, professionally, and medically. I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”
A legacy of leadership, and resilience, within the Giants franchise
The Mara family has been at the helm of the New York Giants since the franchise’s inception.
John Mara‘s grandfather, Tim Mara, founded the team in 1925. Since then, the team has remained under the stewardship of the family for nearly a century.
This latest diagnosis continues a tragic familial pattern, as both Tim Mara and Wellington Mara, John’s father, also died of cancer.
Despite these personal losses, the family has continued to play a central role in shaping not just the Giants, but the broader structure and integrity of the National Football League.
In 1991, the Mara family sold a 50% stake in the team to the Tisch family, forming a long-standing partnership that still governs the franchise today.
Despite this shared ownership, John Mara has remained one of the most prominent and hands-on owners in the NFL, respected across the league for his leadership and deep understanding of the game.
Under his tenure, the Giants have won two Super Bowls and navigated both highs and challenges on and off the field.
Off the field, Mara has taken part in critical NFL decision-making, serving on various league committees and helping to shape collective bargaining agreements and broadcasting rights.
As the 2025 NFL season progresses, John Mara‘s determination to stay actively involved with the team, even during treatment, reflects his deep commitment to the franchise and its legacy.
With an “outstanding team of doctors” supporting him and a history of perseverance behind him, Mara faces this battle with the same grit that has defined his leadership in football.
