Paige Spiranac has reached her breaking point. Following the unruly conduct of fans during the Ryder Cup, the golfer-turned-influencer had harsh words for sports fans in general-especially football fans.
The Ryder Cup took place this weekend at Bethpage Black, drawing an unprecedented number of attendees. This year’s event was marked by intense fan involvement, turning the Farmingdale, New York course into a carnival-like atmosphere.
But not all moments were celebratory, and Spiranac didn’t hold back. “I’m sadly not shocked by the fan behavior at the Ryder Cup because it’s become the norm at most sporting events and, in my opinion, it needs to change across sports,” she said, before taking aim at football fans.
Spiranac doesn’t hold back on football fans
Spiranac, one of golf’s most prominent influencers, often engages with other sports. However, her latest experience at a football game left her deeply disappointed-thanks to one particularly disruptive fan.
“I was at a football game recently, and this man in front of me was disgustingly drunk,” Spiranac shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter). She described how the fan was “yelling the most vile sh*t at players and opposing fans in the stands, spilling his drink everywhere, wanting to fight people.”
She said the man’s behavior ruined the experience for her and those nearby. Even worse, “his young (maybe 7 years old) nephew was right next to him, listening to everything. At one point, the kid started copying him and was yelling the same things, and the family was laughing.”
What’s happening to sports fans?
Although Spiranac didn’t specify whether she was at an NFL game, her experience is far from isolated. Recent incidents at Phillies and Giants stadiums have shown similarly disturbing behavior, including fans snatching souvenirs from children who had rightfully won them.
As Spiranac put it, “I’m not saying you have to sit quietly. You can have passion, chirp, have fun banter, enjoy yourself at the event or game, but there’s a line-and it’s been crossed so many times now.” Many fans echoed her sentiment, warning that, sadly, this likely won’t be the last time.
