Jaxson Dart led the New York Giants to their first victory of the season one game after taking over the starting role from Russell Wilson, but is the 36-year-old bitter about it?
The rookie quarterback completed 13 of 20 passes for 111 yards and contributed 54 rushing yards, including a rushing touchdown on 10 carries. Despite enduring five sacks due to protection issues from the offensive line.
That came just days after it was announced he was replacing the Super Bowl winner as the team’s starter, despite the ex-Denver Broncos man being penned to a $10m contract.
It came after Wilson had produced just 168 and 160 yards against the Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs, for three touchdowns but allowing six sacks.
And although Russ had an explosive game against the Dallas Cowboys with 450 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, at that pace, the change of guard to Dart will become permanent. But Wilson‘s reaction Dart‘s performance was only supportive.
“Got you bro! Young stud! First W! Let’s keep stacking!” Wilson wrote on Instagram following the game, showing encouragement for the rookie who had just earned his first win. There’s no hang ups there.
And in the postgame press conference, Dart reflected on what Wilson meant to him growing up, showing that there is still good chemistry and harmony between the pair in the quarterback room.
“I had his first pair of cleats when they came out,” Dart said. “When you grow up and there are guys that you look up to, and you try to emulate them in the backyard.
“It’s cool to see that. You just want to play good and make people happy and win. Definitely means a lot for me to see that support.”
So, the transition has been smooth, with mutual respect defining the relationship between the veteran and his replacement and rather than harboring resentment over losing his starting position, Wilson has focused on helping both himself and Dart succeed.
It’s perhaps a sign of maturity from the ageing athlete that this is a natural part of sport as the younger generation inevitable takes over with their fresher bodies and sharper reactions.
“No, I’m focused on helping this team win,” Wilson said of his new role. “I’m focused on helping Jaxson. I
“I’m focused on me getting ready to be the best version of me today on Wednesday.
“I want to be here. I love this organization, the process of it all. The guys in the locker room. I’m not giving up on us in this season.”
The Giants have recognized Wilson’s continued value, both as a player and as a leader. In addition to his on-field experience, he provides guidance and energy that elevates the locker room atmosphere.
Mentoring Dart offers the rookie a unique opportunity to learn from a quarterback he admired growing up, fostering a professional and positive environment.
