The Week 4 game marked the long-awaited rebound for the Kansas City Chiefs. Led by Patrick Mahomes, the team not only defeated the Baltimore Ravens 37-20 but also dominated to such an extent that head coach Andy Reid allowed himself the luxury of giving Gardner Minshew some snaps – a move that drew harsh criticism from fans and analysts.
The game at Arrowhead Stadium showed that Mahomes & Co. are still the team to beat in the AFC. The Chiefs dismantled the Ravens with surgical precision on offense, while their defense nearly silenced star quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Midway through the fourth quarter, with Kansas City holding a commanding 37-13 lead, Reid opted to rest Mahomes and send in Minshew. Questions about the move came quickly, but Reid stood firm, praising the seven-year veteran’s abilities.
Minshew is a solid backup for Mahomes
In a recent meeting with the media, the Big Red was full of praise for Minshew. “Gardner’s a brilliant guy, first of all. I know he’s got the mustache and the hair and all that stuff that goes with it, but he’s brilliant,” Reid said, via Bleacher Report insider James Palmer.
Jokes aside, Reid highlighted Minshew’s football IQ and emphasized how valuable his presence is to Mahomes. “He’s got such a good feeling for things as far as the game goes, and I think it’s great for Pat to be able to talk to him.”
Minshew, the 178th overall pick in the 2019 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, has also played for Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and Las Vegas before arriving in Kansas City this season. While he hasn’t had a chance to prove himself with the Chiefs, his résumé speaks volumes.
Gardner Minshew has a solid career behind him
Experts have consistently questioned Reid for keeping only two quarterbacks on his active roster: Mahomes and Minshew. However, in a worst-case scenario, the veteran has the experience to step in and steady the ship until Mahomes returns.
In his six-year career, Minshew has completed 1,094 passes on 1,729 attempts for 11,950 yards, with 68 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions. He was also named to the Pro Bowl in 2023.
If Tyreek Hill’s recent injury proved anything, it’s that no player is immune to bad luck. But if the worst happens in Kansas City, Mahomes knows he has a dependable backup in Gardner Minshew.
