Los Angeles Lakers are set to begin a new big chapter on their NBA experience, and after many controversies surrounding the franchise during the recent months, many people aim their worries to the leadership position.
Luka Doncic and JJ Redick have already begun laying the groundwork for creating a plan to lead the team, a needed move that takes place amidst questions regarding LeBron James’ evolving role.

Doncic, who joined the Lakers in the middle of last season, admitted that stepping into a leadership position is never easy. “Coming into a new team in the middle of the season, it’s kind of hard to get your leadership up,” he told reporters during preseason. “But that’s what preseason is for. Me and JJ talked about it a lot, so we’re just going to have to work it out.”
A change of leadership roles
Redick, in his first year as head coach, has relied on Doncic to set the tone on and off the court. He and the Slovenian are trying to discover and explore new roles before the regular season begins.
For the fans, the plan is a stealthy but significant shift. LeBron James has always been the Lakers’ undisputed alpha player, but in his 40th year and 22nd season in the NBA, the organization is clearly making room for a change.
LeBron’s future role
LeBron has acknowledged that he may employ a new approach, where he plays off the ball more and others, including Doncic and Austin Reaves, have greater responsibility to direct the offense. However, the idea of Doncic taking center stage has been met with controversy among individuals and pundits, who wonder: is this the beginning of the Lakers’ post-LeBron era, or simply a natural shift to extend his playing career?
Even in the face of rumors, Doncic has been crystal clear about his intentions with James, who he holds in high esteem, to the point of urging the Lakers to keep him despite trade rumors. That level of respect can be the difference-maker that maintains the locker room under control with changing leadership roles.
What to keep in mind during preseason
Preseason will be the proving ground for this new framework. Eyes will be on:
- How Doncic claims the leadership role on and off court.
- How Redick balances player’s egos and duties.
- How LeBron adapts to less dominant figure dynamic.
The current leadership status in the Lakers is shifting. With Luka Doncic and JJ Redick leading the way, the franchise is leaning towards a new and modern power structure, one that honors LeBron James’ legacy but also takes care of the future of the team.
