ASHBURN, Va. — Quarterback Jayden Daniels has been medically cleared by the Commanders’ doctors and will practice in full on Wednesday, coach Dan Quinn said, putting him in position to start on Sunday against the L.A. Chargers.
“He’s definitely champing at the bit to get going, so we’re just running the offense, being back to himself,” Quinn said. “That was our discussion today to make sure (he gets) all of the looks, all the speed of practice.”

Wednesday’s practice will be Daniels’ first full workout on the field since suffering a knee sprain in the team’s Week 2 loss in Green Bay. He played the entirety of the game, despite a noticeable limp between plays and in the locker room after the game. An MRI taken the following day confirmed the sprain.
Washington said from the outset that it would be cautious with his return to ensure he didn’t injure his knee further. He was held out of two practices and limited thereafter, while wearing a brace. He wore a brace during Wednesday’s practice.
Marcus Mariota started in his place the last two games, leading the Commanders to a blowout win over the Las Vegas Raiders at home, followed by a loss to the Atlanta Falcons on the road, to which Daniels and the team’s other injured or recovering players did not travel.
As Daniels progressed in his recovery, he and Quinn reiterated that his return to play would be decided by the medical team.
Daniels has taken “just a steadfast approach to it, first off, to put the work in and say I got to do all the things I can to get better,” Quinn said.
Barring a setback this week, Daniels is headed for his first career start back in hometown of L.A. on Sunday, a boost Washington sorely needs after a disappointing 2-2 start to the season.

The team has dealt with myriad injuries that have forced changes on both sides. Washington was without star receiver Terry McLaurin last week because of a quad injury he suffered against the Raiders. The Commanders also have been without receiver Noah Brown and tight end John Bates because of groin injuries they sustained in Week 2. And on defense, four players have been placed on injured reserve because of injuries they suffered in the first four weeks: defensive ends Deatrich Wise Jr. (quad) and Javontae Jean-Baptiste (torn pec), safety Will Harris (fractured fibula) and CB Jonathan Jones (hamstring).

Quinn indicated on Monday that the Commanders could get some players back this week. In addition to Daniels, Bates said in an interview with 106.7 The Fan on Tuesday that he was hopeful of returning to practice this week maybe even playing on Sunday.
The team also opened the 21-day practice window for right guard Sam Cosmi to return. He has been on the physically unable to perform list because of an ACL injury he suffered in the Commanders’ divisional playoff win over the Detroit Lions.
The team can activate him at any point within the next three weeks. If for any reason they don’t activate him in the period, he’s out for the remainder of the season.
It seems unlikely that Cosmi would suit up on Sunday; he hasn’t taken a rep of live football in nine months and Quinn has been a stickler for cautiously ramping players up to full speed.
