A pesar del buen fin de semana de Bakú, la alegría del primer podio con Williams y la confianza extra que eso debe reportarle de aquí al final del año, Carlos Sainz advierte que Singapur no es sobre el papel una de las mejores pistas para el FW47. Y pese a ello, hay muchas cosas que averiguar en los entrenamientos libres.
Sainz revela además que probó en Arabia el nuevo traje refrigerador de la FIA y que su efecto no llega a la extensión de toda la carrera, por lo que quiere dosificarlo y usarlo la última hora. Tiene fallos y es incómodo, pero supone una ayuda extra, según reconoce.
Las opciones en Singapur
“Siendo realistas, cada vez que instalamos un alerón con mayor carga aerodinámica en nuestro coche, parecemos ser un poco menos competitivos. Si ves que todos nuestros buenos resultados se han conseguido con alerones traseros y pistas con baja carga aerodinámica, nuestro coche suele responder mejor. Eso no significa que aquí no intente rendir y ofrecer un fin de semana como el de Bakú”.
“Creo que esa debe ser mi intención de aquí a final de año. Bakú sin duda me dio un gran impulso de motivación e incluso, diría, un alivio, porque confirmó lo que dije durante todo el año: la velocidad no es un problema y que solo necesito tener buenos fines de semana. Espero que esto sirva de ejemplo y pueda seguir así hasta final de año”.
Un año muy complicado
“Si, sin duda, ha sido muy duro, Probablemente uno de los momentos más difíciles, psicológicamente hablando, de mi carrera por la cantidad de contratiempos que tuve que afrontar a lo largo de la temporada. Para mí fue especialmente duro después del parón veraniego, porque volví lleno de energía, lleno de motivación, renovado, con una nueva mentalidad y un nuevo enfoque. Y tuve dos buenas actuaciones en Bakú y Monza”.
“Seguía corriendo en buenas posiciones tanto en Bakú como en Monza, y en ambas ocasiones consecutivas. Se repitió el mismo patrón que en la primera mitad de la temporada. Así que pensé: ‘Vale, he cambiado mi enfoque, estoy lleno de energía y ahora dos contratiempos consecutivos me han vuelto a hacer caer’. Así que, desde luego, no fue nada fácil y fue muy frustrante. Creo que también empezaban a notarlo en mí, lo frustrante que me estaba empezando a sentir. Pero mantuve el pie en la tierra y al final el resultado dio sus frutos”.
El calor extremo en Singapur
“Creo que puede haber 29 grados, pero la humedad se siente dentro del coche y aquí fuera, lo que genera una percepción de calor mucho mayor. Así que creo que son esos dos valores, al sumarlos, los que nos permiten correr mejor. Creo que solo el calor no es tan malo para nosotros. Lo tenemos, por ejemplo, en Hungría, donde hace mucho calor, pero no hay humedad. La humedad por sí sola no es tan mala si no hace demasiado calor”.
El nuevo traje refrigerador, tiempo limitado
“Creo que los equipos están consiguiendo que funcione cada vez mejor cada vez que lo usamos . Al principio, lo teníamos que hacer funcionar más o menos durante media hora. Espero que ahora todo el sistema pueda funcionar al menos una hora. Es una carrera de dos horas, pero ha he estado diez veces en Singapur”.
“Si se rompe o no funciona, no me preocupa. Correré la carrera y saldré fresco, como siempre, pero si funciona, mejor, porque así se sufre menos”.
Los problemas
“Nos damos baños de hielo y quizá no lo necesites tanto al principio y sí al final, pero quizás al final no funcione. Ya veremos. Quizás lo probemos y veamos qué hacemos con él. Parece algo que necesita refinarse y trabajarse para que sea totalmente óptimo. Pero no esperaba que el sistema funcionara a la perfección este primer año. En la F1, los ingenieros y proveedores siempre se ponen manos a la obra, encuentran soluciones y lo consiguen”.
Los baños de hielo antes
“Sí, creo que todo el mundo lo hace. Empezamos hace unos 8 ó 10 años y quizá algunos lo hacían, otros decían que no lo necesitaban y ahora, de repente, todo el mundo lo hace. Basta con leer algunos libros y escuchar algunos podcasts sobre rendimiento y fisiología corporal, estrés y agotamiento para saber que sí marca la diferencia”.

“No estoy tan cómodo como sin él. Pero llega un punto durante la carrera en que ya no te das cuenta de que lo llevas puesto. Así que es lo suficientemente bueno como para que no lo notes todo el tiempo. Notas que saltas para subirte, para bajarte, para hacer el clic”.
“Es un desastre. No es un desastre, pero es incómodo. Pero una vez que estás concentrado en el coche, no recuerdas que lo llevabas. Hice el primer intento en Jeddah (Arabia Saudí) y funcionó. No duró mucho, por eso estábamos trabajando en ello”.
