ASHBURN, Va. — Commanders receivers Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown did not travel with the team to Los Angeles on Thursday and have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.
The decision marks McLaurin’s second missed game because of a quad injury he suffered against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3 and Brown’s third missed game while he deals with groin and knee injuries.

McLaurin returned to the practice field for the first time Thursday alongside Brown and cornerback Jonathan Jones, who is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. The trio worked with head strength and conditioning coach Chad Englehart while the rest of the team practiced on another field.
“He’s been the heart and soul of this organization for a long time,” offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said of McLaurin. “Anytime he’s around, it lifts, lifts guys up, and you can’t replace him, whether it’s as a player or a leader or a mentor for these young players.”
Right guard Sam Cosmi did not travel with the team either, which is not a surprise. The team opened his 21-day practice window this week, but he remained on the physically unable to perform list until he’s activated. Cosmi suffered an ACL injury in Washington’s divisional playoff win in Detroit and will need a ramp-up period before playing in a game again.
The Commanders have dealt with a slew of injuries to start the season that grows longer by the day. Five players have been placed on IR since the start of the season — defensive ends Deatrich Wise Jr. (quad) and Javontae Jean-Baptiste (torn pec), running back Austin Ekeler (Achilles), safety Will Harris (fractured fibula) and Jones.
The team’s latest practice report includes 12 active players recovering from injuries and illness, plus Cosmi. The newest additions: receiver Deebo Samuel (heel), cornerback Mike Sainristil (knee) and defensive tackle Daron Payne (knee). Samuel and Sainristil worked with athletic trainers during the media-viewing portion of Thursday’s practice, and Payne was listed as a limited participant in practice. All three traveled with the team, a promising sign of their availability for Sunday’s game.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels, who returned to practice in full this week after missing two games with a knee sprain, is on track to start and is likely to have his top blocking tight end back as well. John Bates missed two games with a groin injury, but, like Daniels, has been a full participant in practice the last two days.

The Commanders flew to L.A. early and will hold their usual “Fast Friday” practice to complete their week of prep for the Chargers.
“We decided that in the spring, that we oftentimes like to take an extended trip when we can,” coach Dan Quinn said. “We had done it for a trip last year (in Arizona). … I think it’s some good spaces for the team to get together. It’s also to get acclimated, to get ready. There’s a big time change with that. And so we thought we would make that decision to go out early, get ourselves fully ready to go play at our best.”
