Už jen postup do hlavní fáze byl pro ázerbájdžánský celek ohromným úspěchem. Stalo se tak podruhé v klubové historii, na podzim 2017 uhrál v základní skupině dva body za remízy s Atléticem Madrid a vypadl.
Zdá se, že další účast mezi elitou může psát úplně jiný příběh. Ono už se tedy stalo, když Karabach na úvod soutěže senzačně vyhrál 3:2 na půdě portugalské Benfiky. A když ve středu dokázal doma zdolat 2:0 dánskou Kodaň, pokračování senzace bylo na světě.
Teď? Podle Opty je to 65procentní šance na účast mezi elitní čtyřiadvacítkou. Ohromný zlom, který jen dokazuje, že fotbal, stejně jako každý sport, je živý organismus a v ideálním světě se rozhoduje primárně na hřišti.
„Dosáhli jsme proti Kodani úžasného vítězství. Ve druhé půli jsme se hodně bránili a museli vydržet. Tato zkušenost nám pomůže v nadcházejících velkých zápasech,“ podotkl Gurbanov. V minulé sezoně hrál Karabach hlavní fázi Evropské ligy a skončil poslední.
„Měli jsme velmi dobré zápasy, ale vyhráli jen jeden. Věřil jsem, že v tomto ročníku budeme mít lepší výsledky. Hlavní je práce se sebevědomím. Musíme dál tvrdě pracovat a věřit si,“ dodal kouč. Nadšením zářil i kapitán Elvin Jafargulijev, jenž byl zvolen hráčem utkání: „Niky by mě to nenapadlo. Cenu si dám na místo, abych ji měl vždy na očích. Možná na ní budu spát.“

Méně dávají analytici pouze Ajaxu (13 procent) a zmíněnému Kajratu Almaty (1 procento). Před startem soutěže přitom měli svěřenci kouče Jindřicha Trpišovského u svého znaku hodnotu téměř 30 procent.
