Ohio State is off to a blistering start in the 2025 college football season, and College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit is not holding back in his assessment.
On Tuesday, Herbstreit listed the Buckeyes as the top team in the country, placing them ahead of Oregon, Ole Miss, Miami, and Texas A&M in his latest rankings.
“My CFB TOP 5. Do you agree?” Herbstreit wrote on X, sharing his selections with fans.
Herbstreit went into more detail on his podcast, Nonstop, stating, “I respond to the results. I’ve got Ohio State, who I didn’t even have near the top. I had them three or four last week, but I wanted to see them.”
The Buckeyes‘ defense was a standout, limiting Washington, previously averaging over 55 points per game, to just six points and no touchdowns.
This performance has been a hallmark of Ohio State‘s season, as they have yet to allow a touchdown in the red zone.
The defending national champions have opened the season 4-0, including a high-profile win over Texas in a Cotton Bowl rematch.
They followed that with victories against Grambling State, Ohio, and, most recently, Washington. The Buckeyes‘ road win over the Huskies was particularly impressive, with a final score of 24-6.
Julian Sayin’s impressive sophomore season
At the helm of Ohio State’s offense is sophomore quarterback Julian Sayin, who has quickly become a leader.
Sayin has thrown for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Jeremiah Smith caught eight passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
After transferring from Alabama, Sayin was named the starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
In his first four games, he has thrown for 987 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just three interceptions, boasting a nation-leading completion percentage of 78.8%.
Head coach Ryan Day has praised Sayin‘s development, noting his ability to extend plays and make critical decisions under pressure.
In the Washington game, Sayin‘s third-and-17 scramble for 12 yards set up a successful field goal, showcasing his poise and athleticism.
Looking ahead: Can Ohio State maintain their momentum?
Ohio State‘s next challenge comes this Saturday when they host Minnesota. The Golden Gophers, currently 3-1, have shown promise but will face a formidable opponent in the top-ranked Buckeyes.
A victory would extend Ohio State‘s perfect start and solidify their position as the team to beat in college football.
With a balanced offense led by Sayin and a defense that has yet to allow a touchdown in the red zone, Ohio State appears poised for another deep run in the College Football Playoff.
However, as Herbstreit and others have noted, the road ahead will test their resolve and determine if they can maintain their status as the nation’s premier team.
