FIFA’s vice president said soccer’s global governing body decides whether to move 2026 World Cup matches from host cities, contrary to comments made Sept. 25 by President Donald Trump.

Speaking last week about the event, which will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, Trump was asked by reporters in the Oval Office specifically about games in Seattle and San Francisco.

“Well, that’s an interesting question … but we’re going to make sure they’re safe,” he said. “(Seattle and San Francisco are) run by radical left lunatics who don’t know what they’re doing.

“If I think it’s not safe, we’re going to move it out of that city. So if any city we think is going to be even a little bit dangerous for the World Cup, or for the (2028) Olympics … but for the World Cup in particular, because they’re playing in so many cities, we won’t allow it. We’ll move it around a little bit. But I hope that’s not going to happen.”

Six matches are scheduled to be played at Seattle’s Lumen Field and six are set for Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., about an hour’s drive from San Francisco. Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia and New York/New Jersey (East Rutherford) are also host cities in the United States.

Victor Montagliani, the organization’s vice president, said during a conference in London on Wednesday that FIFA determines game sites.

“It’s FIFA’s tournament, FIFA’s jurisdiction, FIFA makes those decisions,” Montagliani said. “With all due respect to current world leaders, football is bigger than them and football will survive their regime and their government and their slogans. That’s the beauty of our game, that it is bigger than any individual and bigger than any country.”

FIFA first established its World Cup host city plan in 2022, with specific games assigned in February 2024, including the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Making changes would create logistical and legal issues, made potentially more difficult because FIFA tournaments depend on local and national governments for support with matters such as visa processing and security measures.

Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s president, has publicly appeared with Trump numerous times as the organization has developed a closer relationship, including establishing an office in Trump Tower in New York.

The final draw for the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams, is slated for Dec. 5 at Washington’s Kennedy Center, over which Trump has taken control as its board chairman.

Me refiero a Marvel Zombies.

Wardley: If I beat Parker, Usyk will want to fight me

Fabio Wardley believes that if he beats Joseph Parker, undisputed world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk will want to fight him next. The winner of Wardley's October 25 bout with Parker will be the mandatory challenger for the WBO heavyweight title, one of the four world championships that Usyk holds. If Usyk is to retain the WBO belt he will have to fight the Wardley-Parker victor next. But the great Ukrainian will have other options and could always vacate that particular title. How the Aces’ bench flipped Game 1 and exposed the Mercury’s biggest weakness

The Las Vegas Aces showed everyone that a championship isn't won by stars alone. In Game 1 of the 2025 WNBA Finals, the Aces leaned heavily on their depth to snatch an 89-86 victory over the Phoenix Mercury, turning what looked like a likely loss into a statement win. Behind clutch contributions from the second unit, Las Vegas erased a late deficit and took control of the series before it even truly began.Phoenix held the lead for most of the night, fueled by standout performances from Kahleah Copper, Satou Sabally, and Alyssa Thomas. But when it mattered, the Aces' bench rose to the occasion. Dana Evans poured in 21 points off the bench, matching game highs held by four-time MVP A'ja Wilson and Copper. Jewell Loyd added 18 more from the pine, and together they pulled the Aces back from the […]

Yankees make bold call with Luis Gil for Game 1 as Boone hints more surprises ahead

The New York Yankees have turned heads just days before their American League Division Series begins. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Friday that Luis Gil will start Game 1 against the Toronto Blue Jays, even though the righthander was not on the Wild Card roster. He also allowed that further adjustments to the postseason roster remain possible.Boone told reporters simply, "Just feel like he's ready for this ... we feel like Luis is ready to go." "Luis Gil is starting Game 1 for the Yankees. Boone says there could be other roster changes for NY, ahead of Blue Jays series," MLB insider Mitch Bannon later tweeted, quoting Boone directly.Gil's selection is bold given the context: he missed much of the regular season with a high-grade lat strain and was not used in the Wild Card series. Nevertheless, he closed the […]

WNBA Finals: Mercury remain confident after crunch-time struggles spoil historic 3-point shooting in Game 1

The Phoenix Mercury had a chance to sneak a road win on Friday, but ultimately fell, 89-86, to the Las Vegas Aces in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.The Mercury have been in this position before, as they lost the first game in both the first round and semifinals. This, Kahleah Copper said postgame, has taught Phoenix how to bounce back stronger."Obviously that it doesn't matter. Not that it doesn't matter, but it's OK," she said when asked about what her team has learned. "This is a long series. I think the takeaway from those other first ones, the mindset was 'back to the drawing board.' We had the utmost confidence in our locker room and in our coaches to make the adjustments. Now it's the […]
