Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice will need further assessments on their respective knee and back injuries, and head coach Mikel Arteta has not been optimistic about their situations.
Odegaard sustained an injury within the first 20 minutes of their 2-0 win over West Ham. While duelling for the ball, his left knee collided with West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville’s leg. The Arsenal captain was seen to by medics and returned to the pitch shortly after the coming together. However, he was unable to continue and was replaced by Martin Zubimendi just before the half-hour mark.

“Immediately he was uncomfortable,” Arteta said in his post-match press conference. “I just spoke to him, he’s not positive about it, he’s got a brace on, we’ll have to wait and see from the doctors, but we haven’t been very lucky with that either.”
Rice, who scored Arsenal’s first goal, was forced off after holding his lower back in the 79th minute. Both players have been called up for their respective national teams, Norway and England, for the October international break.

Asked whether Rice was alright, the Arsenal head coach added: “Well, he’s not because he asked me to come off, so that’s a shame. He had pain in his back and he could not carry on, which is something very unusual for Declan, so we’ll have to assess him and see how he is.”
For Odegaard, this was the third time he had been substituted through injury in the first half of a Premier League game this campaign. He sustained a shoulder injury against Leeds United on August 23 and re-aggravated that injury against Nottingham Forest on September 13.
“We haven’t had him since the start of the season for one reason or the other, the shoulder twice and then this injury,” Arteta said.
“We’ll have to wait and see the extent of that injury, and we’ll find solutions, but obviously he’s our captain and is a player that gives us a completely different dimension with the things that he can do, especially in attacking, and let’s wait, and hopefully it’s not that bad.”
Zubimendi played a key role in both Arsenal goals on the afternoon, after replacing Odegaard. Arteta also had Ethan Nwaneri, who replaced Odegaard against Leeds and Nottingham Forest, to call upon later in the game.
Arsenal are next in action after the international break, when they travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham on October 18.
