Blake Lively appeared to extend an unexpected gesture of goodwill toward Taylor Swift after the launch of her new album, as speculation continues over the breakdown of their once-close friendship.
The actress quietly “liked” Swift‘s Instagram post celebrating the release of The Life of a Showgirl, signaling a possible thaw in their relationship after a tense period full of legal drama.
The interaction drew significant attention because it arrived amid rumors that one of Swift‘s new tracks, “Ruin the Friendship,” reflects tension between the two. Online speculation spread rapidly after fans noted parallels between the title and reports of a cooling relationship.
However, industry insiders have indicated the song’s lyrics, centered on a teenage romance, are unrelated to Lively or their reported fallout as there is no obvious sign of change on the end of the Grammy-winning arist.
Swift, 35, marked the album’s debut on Thursday evening with a series of glamorous, showgirl-inspired photos she posted online on October 2.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am to share this with you,” Swift wrote. “An album that just feels so right.
“A forever thank you goes out to my mentors and friends Max and Shellback for helping me paint this self portrait.
“If you thought the big show was wild, perhaps you should come and take a look behind the curtain… The Life of a Showgirl is out now.”
Why did Taylor Swift and Blake Lively fall out?
For years, Lively and Swift’s friendship was one of Hollywood’s most visible – a relationship marked by public outings, red-carpet appearances, and family get-togethers as the star singer often spent time with Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, and their children.
She even named one of her Folklore characters after their daughter but their bond, however, has been overshadowed by recent legal tensions surrounding Lively’s It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni.
The speculation over Swift and Lively’s estrangement intensified following developments in Baldoni’s sexual harassment case as court filings obtained by Page Six in September revealed that Swift had been drawn into the proceedings earlier this year.
That is said to have heightening tension between her and Lively as according to the documents, Swift was subpoenaed by Baldoni‘s legal team in May but the summons was later dropped.
The same filings alleged she had “agreed” to be deposed later in the case, though her representatives firmly disputed that claim. The judge presiding over the matter, Lewis J. Liman, granted an extension allowing for additional testimony to be scheduled if necessary.
Baldoni’s legal team suggested that Swift’s album launch prevented earlier scheduling, implying her work commitments had taken priority but her lawyers, however, rejected any suggestion that the singer had consented to testify.
“My client did not agree to a deposition,” Swift‘s attorneys said, in a formal letter to the court. “But if she is forced into a deposition, we advised (after first hearing about the deposition just three days ago) that her schedule would accommodate the time required during the week of October 20.”
The overlap between the legal case and the timing of Swift‘s album release fueled widespread conjecture that professional tensions had spilled into the pair’s personal relationship. Sources close to both women have described the atmosphere as “strained but not final.”
That suggests the two are maintaining a cautious distance as their legal teams navigate the ongoing dispute so for Lively, the decision to publicly acknowledge Swift’s album post, even with a single like, carried symbolic weight.
The actress’s action, though understated, was widely interpreted as a signal that she wishes to de-escalate public speculation and reaffirm respect for Swift’s career achievements, despite unresolved issues behind the scenes.
Observers note that both women have previously shown a preference for privacy in handling personal conflicts, and neither has directly commented on the reported rift – but as it stands, Swift‘s camp has remained focused on the album’s promotion.
