Fans of the WNBA should be laser-focused on an extremely compelling WNBA Finals matchup between the Phoenix Mercury and Las Vegas Aces. Instead, all eyes are an ongoing war between star player Napheesa Collier and Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
Stemming from alleged unsavory comments made by Engelbert in the past, Collier brought out the flamethrower after the Minnesota Lynx got eliminated from the playoffs. In her emphatic statement, Collier called Engelbert’s leadership the “worst in the world”. According to Collier, Engelbert made disrespectful remarks about not only Collier, but Caitlin Clark as well.
Napheesa Collier’s bold statement puts WNBA leadership under fire
Engelbert had apparently stated that Clark would be making nowhere close to her financial numbers if it weren’t for the WNBA giving her the platform to do it. Clark refused to directly address those comments personally when given the opportunity, but Engelbert has come out to defend herself as the Finals kick off.
Cathy Engelbert believes she’s being painted in an unfairly negative light
Engelbert appeared in a press conference where she claimed there were “inaccuracies” in some of Collier’s comments and the reporting that followed it.
There’s a lot of inaccuracy out there through social media and all this reporting. I have been in touch with Napheesa, we’ve exchanged texts, we’re talking next week. Obviously, a lot of reporting, a lot of inaccuracy about what I said or what I didn’t say. I will tell you I highly respect the players… I’m obviously disheartened. I’m a human, too. I have a family.
Engelbert concluded her response by saying that “I just think there’s a lot of inaccuracy out there“. It’s unclear what exactly those inaccuracies are, although it sounds like she’s talking about Collier’s recollection of their private conversations.
It seems like this war between the players and the league is only getting started. Collier and Engelbert clearing the air in their meeting next week will be the first step towards repairing the relationship.
